“There is a destiny that makes us brothers
None goes his way alone
All that we send into the lives of others
Comes back into our own”
I took it out from under the glass and photographed it on a cloudy day.
Inspired by a photo from about 1922, my dad and his brothers sit in the doorway of a shed, taking a wasps’ nest apart. They were looking for honey, but found “grub worms” instead. My dad is the third boy from left. The standing girl and boy are neighbors. She taught third grade in Terry, Montana for many, many years. She was my third grade teacher for a time.
From left, Jerry, Jim, Ed and John Kempton. Florence and Howard Lindenmeyer
My grandad quoted Omar Kayyam and encouraged his boys to do the same. Only Uncle Jim was really good at it and pulled it out of his hat for every occasion. But the first one I remember Dad quoting is:The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,Moves on: nor all your Piety nor WitShall lure it back to cancel half a Line,Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it
— Omar Khayyam
