My first family photo shoot

I bit the bullet and arranged a shoot with a family who had replied to a post on RB. Since my foundation course at the Bangkok Photo School, I have realised that even though I like to dabble in all different genres, child portraits is something that I really want to pursue and perfect.

As a teacher aswell, I have always been taught through my training that a good teacher is a reflective teacher and I could say that reflection is one of the keys to success in any discipline/profession.

So, with that in mind, I want to reflect on my experiences during the shoot. Firstly, it is for myself, but if it helps others to improve their own practice then great!

Things that went really well:
1.) I was able to be myself in the shoot. I felt very confident directing them and when choosing the settings on my camera.
2.) I used the light well (according to feedback from my teacher and BPS).
3.) I had alot of photos in which the eyes were sharp.
4.) I captured very precious moments (according to teacher from BPS).
5.) The shoot came to a natural end and I could gauge when the children had had enough.
6.) The bubbles were a big hit with the children.
7.) I had produced some images (about 23) which I am very proud of.
8.) I received very positive feedback from the family and they are going to spread the word.

Things I need to improve on:
1.) Make sure that the background is not too distracting or blown out sky.
2.) Check all 4 corners of the frame to make sure there is nothing sticking out the subject’s head or that I haven’t chopped off any fingers.
3.) When doing group shots, persevere until I have a photo where they are all smiling.
4.) Practise panning so that I can get a child running in a photo.
5.) Think more about the composition rather than clicking away.

I am very proud of this shoot and it has given me the confidence and the passion to learn more and get better and better.

I will be posting a few images on my RB for critique in the next few days.
