Babington Tea Rooms, established 1893 Rome, Italy.

Many thanks to Sandra who has kindly allowed me to use her poem in support of my image of Babington Tea Rooms.

gauche, poor, impressionable
all those young years ago
near the Spanish Steps
Keats’s house
and the fashionable Via Condotti,
our hands cupped against the hot Roman sun
we peered against the restaurant window
into the hushed sanctum of the bourgeoisie
dining amongst the potted palms
and wondered at its unattainability.

thirty long years on
not so gauche
not so impressionable
we casually enter
with nonchalant smugness
into its unchanged mediocrity
and find it offers only stale shadows
fading memories
and a momentary stillness
from the real life of the outside world.
