Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse by

Once In A Blue Moon…

“Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21,”
Geoff Chester, NASA in an interview for AOL news.

I had planned to photograph the whole event, but, unfortunately, clouds rolled in early, obscuring this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

These were shot at maximum mechanical zoom (72mm), f8 @ 1/125, ISO 80, handheld.

See MSNBC’s Photoblog for more info and pictures.

I’m not selling any work here. I don’t feel at this time that it’s worth the paperwork for taxes on the pittance I would make.

On the other hand, I’m not taking up a lot of drivespace with my small sized works either.

If you like my work, your kind comments are appreciated.

If I can help you, let me know!

fabulous capture, it was too cloudy round my way to see anything :(, this is brilliant x

  • Thanks! I am missing most of it also because of clouds, but I got what I could. I wish I had had a ‘real’ camera and lens tonight…

Beautiful work Katya. I got to see it very briefly through a hole in our clouds, just as it went total. Should have been nicely red for some somewhere.

  • Thanks. Yes, this was only a brief period as it started in the penumbra. I had looked forward to shooting the whole thing. I would have been on a tripod (my camera, that is, lol) as it progressed.
