Help Please by KatsEye

Posted on March 13, 2011

I am going to venture out of my comfort zone and enter a couple of art shows this spring. I need to choose at least six pieces of art. I would like to do the following:
2 – Bird Captures
2 – Flower Captures
2 – Landscape Captures

At each of the shows I will present one of each. That’s if I get selected. Please help me by picking what you feel would be the best work for each category. I would really appreciate the help. I will also have them for sale. I also need help in picking an appropriate size for each piece.

Thank you so much. Kathy

    Hi Kathy

I’d like to help you pick some. I’m going to start by saying I don’t know if I saw all your images. It might be easier if you organized your portfolios into the topics above so one could see all the images as you the artist would classify them. It’s pretty easy to do with the new management tools. I see you seem to have started but they are not organized in these 3 areas. I tried searching by tags too, but even by tags your images did not appear. So a day of organizing may help us help you.

As for entering contest/art shows: I think it’s also helpful to understand what the judges will be using as their selection criteria. Most shows publish that. For instance are they looking for originality and uniqueness, or the quality of the print, or certain characteristics. Do you have any information by the shows producers. Questions to ask do they allow photo enhancements, like you did with your eagle shot or the horse shot below do they want only traditional photography. When doing contests it’s important to understand the judging criteria, and the format/mounting they want the prints to be in. All this matters and it would be good to post that here if you know what it is.

From your birds, I liked this simple one for it’s quality and composition.
You had some others that were more original

    For Landscapes I like:

and I really like the quality of this one, even though I don’t know what category I’d put it in, perhaps landscape.. In my opinion this is one of your best images for originality and composition.

For Flowers I think this one is nice

    and this one

I’m not sure what kind of show your entering it into professional or amateur, I find most of the work I saw in your portfolio not at the professional level, but would work well in a more local amateur show. So pick the show you enter into and you will find more success as a first attempt. Think composition, quality, originality, color saturation and subject impact all can also have a bearing on shows judges. Hope you find this helpful.

    Hi Kathy:
Mary gave you a lot of valid information. Is there a size criteria? Will the images be matted and framed? I personally like the 9 X 12 size, not too small, not too large but that’s just mt preference. I don’t like the new RB change categorizing images into their own special sections. Some artist’s probably do. The Home Page of the artist looks tacky with the large lettering at the bottom of an image. Just my opinion.

I like Mary’s selections of your images and will try and find the time to visit your gallery and add my opinion. Can you answer some of the q’s asked?
    Barb

  • KatsEye:

No size requirement and Framed because I want these to be hung. Matting must be white or neutral colored. The size sounds perfect. I wish I would have never started with the new thing and do not know how to put it back to the way I had it.

Mary had some nice selections. She gave some expert advice that I will take into account when I hit the art fair market myself.

Here’s a couple others of yours that I like and think might sell.

These migght catch the eye of a buyer and be potential wall hangers. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • KatsEye:

Thank you so much Adam. First I have to be selected. Thats the hard part. I love your choices as well.

Yes, I hadn’t seen the whole portfolio, and I do like the ones Adam posted some even better than the ones I selected especially in the flower category and that orange sky one is really nice too. And I also saw this one too.

  • KatsEye:

thank you so much again. I really appreciate all you help. Have a great day.

Such a difficult thing to advise on. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes and sees work in totally different ways. I’ll pass if you don’t mind because I think it would be presumptuous of me to suggest one work may be better than another. My advice would be – follow your heart Kathy and it will lead you to the images that best reflect you.

  • KatsEye:

I know the final choice is mine. I just wanted some idea of what people liked. I am ok with the fact you do not suggest anything. Thank you anyways. Hugs Kathy

    Kathy,
I don’t know how to show you my selections toggling back and forth from my choices to this section so I will send you those that I really liked in a BM. As you can see here, Missmoneypenny hit the nail on the head, it’s hard to advise you because we all see splendor in many of your works. We can, however, wish you the best of luck in your selections.
