The Milky Way by Malcolm Katon

Canvas Prints

Size:
$57.95
Available to buy on…

What else do you do on a cold winter’s night but drive for an 1 3/4hr to an abandoned church just to use it as foreground interest for a shot of the milky way.

When you see so many stars you realise how large the universe is and how small we are!

Canon 5D MKIII
Canon 16-35mm 2.8L

After a bit of experimenting I found that a shutter speed of 20 seconds at F 2.8 and ISO of 2000 gave me the result that I wanted.

Location: Yarra, just south of Goulburn NSW

Where do I begin? Bloody hell, Malcolm, you’ve excelled yourself! You also picked a helluva cold place to take the shot! But I’m gobsmacked. There are so many things to say about that shot I dunno where to start. Perfect location with the abandoned church, for one thing, and the clarity of the sky is incredible – not to mention how busy it is out there. I hope to experience a sky like that when I’m outback. Let me just say your dedication to your craft deserves a medal. Go Malcolm!

  • Thank you very much for lovely comments Gary. I am really looking forward to some more shots like this when I head out west. I hope that you get to see some skies like this too. When are you heading out and where to?

I know that ruin and you have turned it into a pretty picture..kinda figured you’d have the MK3 by now….. Try F6.3 30 seconds and ISO 6400 with the NR turned on…… this exposure worked equally as well but!

  • Thanks David, I found the processing to be the tricky part. Any tips on focussing for shots like these? I used infinity and it wasn’t quite sharp enough and then just knocked it back a touch and it seemed better.
