Autumn Abandonment by KatMagic Photography

A bright, sunny morning with a very sheer film of ice on the pond and frost on those leaves on the ground (crunch, crunch). I like this in color but the desolate and bleak aspect of that bench (which is always occupied) didn’t quite speak to me in color… still not sure about the black and white version either.

My friend Kim (see her B&W work here .. go look right now) does a lot of black and white and her fabulous work inspired me.

The water has a great shine to it and the contrast of all the texture is very cool! I can’t believe you trashed this before! That bench location is just perfect! A great mood and beautiful black and white tones! I think it is wonderful!

  • Hi Kristi and thanks so much… still not sold on this one but trying hard with black and white. I was looking at your “SILVER”….and it’s just so perfect I can’t even imagine it in color and I think that’s the key… I’m far from that here but it a tiny start.. thank you so much once again.

I really like it Kat! – First of all…. the composition is what makes it – credit your terrific eye. And I like it in b&w to reduce distractions. I think you have done a terrific job with the contrast and getting a full tonal range. The only thing that might make it more powerful is if all the leaves weren’t there – the contrast detail they give is almost too much. This same view in snow or grass, might be stronger.
And THANK you so much for the support of my B&W….. you are on your way here for sure…. this is good work! xxX

  • Hi Kim… something is not right with this and I think you are correct.. the leaves are too busy. The ground was covered in them and the frost made them sparkle and it is too much .. I think you are right.. I can imagine this with the normally-manicutred lawn and think it would translate more appropriately. Black and white is far from easy…Thank you so much for this and the other tip which, as you can see, was another good one as I switched it up right away…

You should do more B&W! I really like this one, the details are wonderful and it just about sums up how I feel about the Autumn turning to Winter. Well done, Kat!

  • I almost didn’t recognize you.. nice new avatar! Thanks for your kind words but nobody should spend so much time on one image as I did on this so not sure another b&w will be in the works too soon.. very tough and gives me a new respect for those that do this sort of work. Thanks again so much for the encourage though, Christine, I really appreciate it. Have a good week ahead!

Very strong composition, which makes it structurally well suited to black and white. I really like the way the tree trunks take the eye to that wonderful bench. Less depth of field (more blurring of foreground leaves) would, I believe, make the image stronger yet.

  • Thank you, Celeste.. – yes.. those leaves are causing a problem (Kim noted that also)… I’m playing around with it a bit. Not too often I’m advised to use less dof.. ! Thanks again as, as you know, I really appreciate your opinion!
