One of my very friendly Wood Duck boys….not a crop; in fact, this guy stepped right out of the pond and simply walked over to me as I crouched down and I actually had to back-off with my lens as he was too close. There really is nothing like the intricately-patterned and glossy brightly-colored plumage of the Wood Duck male….. happy little ducks too! (he did get a nice juicy green grape as a reward for this unexpected portrait sitting!)

(Technical stuff: I kept my focus (and resulting sharpness) squarely on this guy’s face; specifically, the eye area.. reason being …well, if you ever want to test out a lens for color-fringing try a Wood Duck male in sunshine…along the edges of any color contrast you can get objectionable fringing of an offensive magenta-like color and it’s totally headache-inducing when, viewing your photos on your computer, you detect the dreaded fringing…so, I had practiced earlier with the depth of field preview button and peaking color feature which allow me to determine exactly my sharp points and I sent everything else into a soft blur which deals nicely with that fringing issue…)
