A New Day on the Breakwater by KatMagic Photography

Got up super early the other day and walked over to the shore of Lake Ontario to look for………uh…shorebirds!

After I set up my gear I peered through my camera’s viewfinder and found myself looking out at two lone Ring-billed Gulls on the breakwater….the sun was just….. just.. coming up – trying hard to burn off some stray remnants of fog that had settled in over the water. The scene I saw was somehow of another world as the colors were a combination of subdued neutrals and contrasted hues thanks to the odd light of the moment – the second, in reality.

I am currently reading a book about photography.. sure, nobody likes those cute goslings shots or handsome dog shots or territorial Red-winged Blackbird shots more than I; however, this author commented that photography is essentially driven by capturing for your audience what your eye saw… bringing to your audience that moment.. through the sheer emotion of the image if you can seize it…so, it occurs to me that this photo might be just that.. it’s not super pretty or striking or attention-getting but it’s what I saw and it was – A New Day on the Breakwater.

Kat – this is really quite stunning!! It is a wonderful ‘moment in time’, and I agree with your book’s author – this is what photography is about!! You have captured the mood, the light, and evoked an emotion – all within a wonderful composition. True photographic art!!! Bravo!!
    I Love It!!! xxX

  • Thank you so much, Kim…I’m so glad you like this as I was unsure about it….really pleased with your words…thank you thank you!!!

I could not agree more with the writer. What book is it?. Here is a moment out of life of the shorebirds magnified in the process of your vision through this presentation. Great tones for emotion. Well done Kat :)))

In my view, this is a highly successful image because I can feel the quiet, the peaceful hush of that moment. While I agree with the author that the ideal is to capture for your audience what you saw, I believe that communicating the emotion (if you can do it) is what takes the photo to the next level. You’ve done that here, and I love the photo!

  • Oh, Celeste..thank you very much… As I said to Kim.. I really hesitated about this photo but, in the end, I also felt I had to take a chance and step out of my comfort zone..I am delighted with your comment and thank you once again.

I think it is striking and attention getting! The magic of the early morning light brings such beauty and interest and then your eye goes to the sweet gulls going about their morning. I like the soft vignette that brings it all together. The tones and mood to this are stunning!
