It really is this green, the view across the pond – with the green of the trees reflecting upon the water it is a magnificent sight.
Those are nesting boxes you see at the water’s edge. Used by the pond’s Wood Ducks who are cavity nesters and will also nest in trees (old woodpecker homes) close to water. Amazingly, the day after hatching the female Wood Duck leads her brood out of their nest hole and, after checking for any danger lurking, signals to her ducklings to literally jump out of the nest hole to the ground beneath immediately then leading them to water and a feeding area. An abrupt start to life!
Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Starlings also will nest in boxes so there’s a bit of competition that takes place for this prime real estate…… and speaking of real estate, that’s a ‘private property’ sign you see…..it said no trespassing…. not no photographs.. :)
Have a great week-end everyone and, to my Canadian friends – a great long week-end!
