Introducing leggings. You’ll never run out of inspiration.

Featured in: The Birds (Jan., 2012)

Northern Shovelers winter here in Toronto arriving on the pond in late October…rather an elusive duck I don’t think this fellow saw me hiding and I was able to get this shot just as the sun shone brilliantly upon rising …setting off the russet and dark emerald tones of the Shoveler’s plumage…you often see Shovelers twirling around feeding in little groups and, of course, they are known for those spoon-like bills. Particularly striking in flight, too!

Such a splendid bird, and the all-important eye is tack-sharp! Love that reflection!

  • Thanks, Celeste, they are beautifully marked and very striking.. but the light makes all the difference on their plumage….

    Oooooh a boy bird Shoveler!
One of my favorite ducks and my newest fave image here on RB.
    Excellent capture in beautiful light.
    Well done!

  • Thanks, Heather! I was pleased to get this as they are rather concerned about people and wander over to the far end of our pond….thank you again.

The light striking the duck is beautiful but what really delights me is the subtle shading from the dark green of the background to the gold of the foreground.

  • Thanks, Jacqui, I appreciate such an insightful comment…. it was just sunrise when I took this and I was the only one around and the light was incredible… when I go out so early like that I really realize how light can make such a difference.. thank you again.
