I’m not a huge fan of Halloween.. never have been. The whole ghosts and witches theme… don’t get it. There’s a house near my home that decks their front lawn out like a cemetery the week prior to Halloween, don’t get it. Then there’s the whole getting-a-bag-full-of-candy-from-strangers thing and your parents having to go through it to ensure there is nothing in it that could harm you… uh…yup.. tons of fun.

So, this Common Grackle is the closest I can get to scary. I shot him in silhouette and added a bit of color to the background. A spirited member of the Blackbird family, and not one of the most beloved birds, Grackles are not known for their polite manners, beautiful looks nor melodic voice but are, indeed, known for their aggressive and cocky behavior – asserting their dominance at backyard birdfeeders bullying aside even the quarrelsome and feisty Blue Jays and House Sparrows. However, with his iridescent plumage (which appears all back from a distance), the male’s rather striking.

So, great ready for the really scary part because …. come November 1st, as the retailers are putting away the Halloween stuff …they’ll drag out the Christmas stuff and it all starts….
