Featured in: Just Butterflies (Oct., 2011)

You know we can’t all be flashy and colorful and drop-dead eye-catchingly gorgeous…this butterfly is the epitome of subtle…. his delicate wings are like fine chocolate lace interwoven with glimmers of blue and orange .. all edged in a pale cream…..however, when he flies and opens his wings he proudly displays the brightest and most vivid blue submarginal spots and he holds his own with the best of them! Plus, just look at that face…

What a beauty, Kat! Marvellous capture. I was lucky enough to “get” one down at Cooper Marsh so I know what you mean about the beautiful blue spots. Did you know they overwinter as adults in a kind of cryogenic state?

  • Hi Mike, I did read that about them.. very interesting world.. the world of butterflies… Thanks, as always, Mike for your kind words. I’m glad you can appreciate this subtle fellow…

Very nicely composed image! The background colors are perfect to accent his unique wings which are so full of interesting texture. It reminds me of the bark of a tree! Nice work!

  • Why thanks, Angie, I’m so glad you like this… it’s not a very flashy image so I wasn’t sure if I should post it but the Mourning Cloak really is a handsome butterfly so I thought I owed it to him.. I’m so pleased with your words.. thank you!

    Beautiful shot, Kat!
I really like the mourning cloaks. Their subtly intrigues me as do their ragged wing edges.

Ahhhhhhh, a real beauty. But you had me at ‘chocolate’ LOL! Love the variable textures between the butterfly and the flowers. Beautiful!

  • Ha, that’s so funny, Carolyn… I guess you are a chocolate fan…Thanks for the nice comment and for making me smile too!
