I decided I should start to use my 50mm – as the eye sees things – lens (I think it’s Bryan Peterson that raves about this lens) so, as I had a couple of hours this afternoon, I walked to the shores of Lake Ontario…everytime I use this lens I wonder why I don’t use it more often… fast, sharp and light-weight (bonus!)… if anyone reading this doesn’t own a 50mm go get one… they are really inexpensive.

Anyway, from the shores of Lake Ontario the Ring-billed Gulls (not “seagulls”) and the Canada Geese (not “Canadian Geese”), a giddy and active group this afternoon, say hello to all you Redbubblers… one guy even did a little dance for you all. I think he’s on the “Dancing with the Stars” line-up for next month. There’s also lots of gulls perched on the breakwater.

I de-saturated the image in ACR and fooled with the contrast to oomph the whole thing a bit… the light was quite interesting late this afternoon and just increasing the black point a bit resulted in something I liked – I hope you do too!

Beautiful image and processing . . . the 50mm is definitely a great lens for the price and I should use mine more often too :-)

I really like reading your thoughts about this image and its inhabitants, as well as the virtues of walking around with a “normal” lens (which may or not be a 50mm, depending on the size of your digital camera’s sensor). I like the slightly desaturated look, as it seems to put more emphasis on the birds. Otherwise I’d guess that gorgeous sky would try to steal attention. Marvelous image!

  • Thanks, Celeste, I’m thrilled you like this… Yes, on a full frame the 50mm is 50mm…about 75mm on a crop sensor…Yes, the color the sky had a subtle pink tone as the sun was setting….thank you so much again.. I’m always so pleased to hear from you!

I love the soft coloring, your pov and the perspective given from down low almost, if not at the levels of the ducks! Exceptional clarity and dof! Sure is a nice result from this lens, it is on my list…

  • Hi Joanne, I brought my right angle finder along with me and used that.. that’s how I was able to get so low down… I need to use it more often…nice to hear from you, as always, and thank you! – KatMagic

The colour you’ve achieved gives the composition an appealing warmth and hints at vintage. A gorgeous scene and beautifully detailed.

Wow, Kat!!! This is just awesome!! I really like your pov and the de-saturation has added such interest and quality!! You have really captured the birds just doing what they do, which pulls the viewer in and I feel like I spent a moment at Lake Ontario! This is huge fave for me!!

  • Thanks, Kristi, what a nice comment…you have made my day!

lovely capture Kat, and I love my 50mm! I had to use it manually on my previous camera, made me work that much harder, but on my current one it’s more compatible, it’s a fab little lens and gives a gorgeous bokeh
