This is a photo of the Great Blue Heron that, from July to November, resides at our pond (Grenadier Pond, High Park, in Toronto, Ontario). The Great Blues do not breed at Grenadier Pond but, return each year to the pond, upon departing from their rookeries along the shores of Lake Ontario. I am a member of the Toronto Camera Club and this photo placed as an Honorable Mention in the Nature Images Competition last December. However, I was asked to rename it – my original title was “The Eye” – and it told a story but, as requested, I gave it a rather bland title for entry into the competition. However, I am using the original title here and, following below, is the original true tale that accompanies this image.
This Great Blue at our pond allows his admirers to get very, very close to him. Often, I almost wish I had my macro lens when I am in his presence – he is that close. I could reach out and touch his lovely feathers.
Usually, I put aside my camera and just watch, in fascination, as he is instinct-driven in his prey-fixated world….. On this particular day, a group of Blue Jays were very upset by the presence of a rather noisy Osprey flying overhead. As I stood close by the Great Blue, he looked up into the sky above and his eye trailed the Osprey as I raised my camera … to capture The Eye…..a moment of nature..
