Now that March is upon us, it won’t be too long now until the Red-Winged Blackbirds start to arrive…My posted photo is a female – the males arrive from their wintering areas, often as early as mid-March, a week or so ahead of the females in order to scout out territories.
What follows in the days after those boys arrive involves an intricate strategy used to defend a chosen territory from rivals … because a large and productive territory – combined with flashy red shoulders and a rich voice will woo all the pretty girls… once a male has selected his mate, that lucky girl will start to work in weaving their nest amidst the cattails.
That first Red-Winged Blackbird’s short, raspy song is always a delight as …spring will soon be here!
