When the weather is not so suitable for landscapes I like to try some new techniques that can be done in the indoors where I can stay warm and dry.

So I set up my off camera flashs the other day and had some fun capturing steam.

Canon 7D, f4, 1/125, iso 100, 90mm.

580EX flash off camera left through umbrella. (to side of subject)

Lamp to camera right. (aimed at side of subject) [could have used third flash but had no battery for old trigger]

580EXII off camera back and slightly to right, snooted through “pringle snoot” to just backlight the steam.

Cactus 5 triggers.
Black foamcore board for base and background.
Note: for a dreamy look to the steam this is best done with continuous lighting and slow shutter speed. Since knocking my good lamp off the bench I don’t have enough continuous light to do it that way so just focussed on the front of the teapot which left the steam slightly blurred to give the dreamy look.

It’s such a simple image, but so complicated to set up Kathy!! Looks lovely, a real “commercial” shot.

  • thanks Barb.

I missed this one, Kathy… what a fabulous idea! I have no idea what a snoot is, let alone a pringle snoot or a cactus, but I know a nice cuppa when I see one :) :) :)

  • Glad you like it Mieke. I had a lot of fun doing it.

I’ve written a journal just for you explaining what a pringle snoot is.
