A few pic’s around Kaiapoi from the very violent and frightening 7.1 Earthquake that rocked the city of Christchurch NZ and surrounding areas – 4.35 am Saturday 4th Sept 2010.
We have lost many heritage buildings and businesses in the CBD and a huge amount of houses have been condemned for demolition through liquefaction and damage from the quake.
Thankfully we escaped with only minimal damage to our house – broken glass and china and some superficial cracks in our ceilings and walls. I am so thankful to still have the walls and roof intact unlike many others not too far from us.
These photos were taken 9ks from our house in the town of Kaiapoi. It wasn’t possible to get near the city for photos; it’s all been blocked off for assessments and demolition of condemned buildings.
We have lost Things but not LIVES – Thank God!
Its now 5 days after the big quake and we have had about 360 aftershocks, some very scary!
Update: now 4 weeks later and we’ve had 1463 aftershocks to date!
Further update 6mths on we’ve had 5400 aftershocks!
This photo below is not one of mine, however its a great quake shot
