Saviour
I am sharing this image that my husband Wayne took many years ago that’s been scanned from a print.
In 1992 we had an incredible snow fall which left many sheep stranded in the high country and needed to be rescued.
In New Zealand it’s known as Snow Raking – combing the hills looking for stranded stock, freeing them and standing them up (when they lie down they get frozen in place), then stamping a track down to lower slopes where they can be fed.
Since we are in our autumn/winter season I’ve uploaded this for interest.

This is a strong landscape and a very well composed presentation!
Rich and fine deatils, and effective focal points…
And the snow is very attractive.. despite the fact it was 5 to twelve for the sheep!

i can’t even imagine being a herder….no matter what country or climate. each place has it’s pitfalls and tribulations. this one? goes beyond the mark for me as i HATE being frozen…i can’t imagine clumping thru snow looking for white sheep. what an amazing image! tell you’re husband? well-done!
Kathy Reid replied
Thanks Carla, deep snow doesn’t do a lot for me either, thanks also for the fav:))

Apart from being a very very good photo the story behind it is very good as well. I can’t really fathom how hard busting that trail for the sheep would have been.
Impresses the hell out of me what people are capable of sometimes!

Hi Garth, it’s incredible of what can be achieved in times such as these.

This is so interesting. I have to chuckle a bit though for I have made snow paths in the side yard for our dog when snow piles up. No, it’s not the same thing as clearing a path for sheep in the high country but it brought tramping around in my back yard to mind. The neighbors must have thought I looked odd but now I can tell them I am snow raking kiwi style. Cheers!
Kathy Reid replied
Splendid idea ‘snow raking kiwi style’, sounds good to me. I bet your dog loves you for making his life easier to get through the snow!
Luca Renoldi
