A Question for one of those technical type photographers...

I collect old things…

I used to have a box brownie years ago and it rusted so I threw it (although I still seriously regret that decision…)

I am a digital baby… I am a trained graphic artist but now do photographic artwork… so… all I know how to do really is point the digital device and click… lots of post work as you may appreciate…

However… I still want to learn film a bit (despite not having any money to invest much into it let alone time…)...

I in my collection of old things… have an…

OLYMPUS TRIP 35…

It’s film and has numbers and dials on it (I just downloaded the manual from the web too) but seems basic, so I think I can get a grip on it… I know A stands for apperture (doesn’t it?) and the F stands for F-Stop, although can’t exactly remember what that is… and I know there is a ratio type scenario between light and shutter speed (or is that aperture?) etc… BUT…

This camera is soooooo cute and it’s in immaculate condition (just a little dusty) it’s been tested and has a passed sticker on it…

What does it mean to have an OLYMPUS TRIP 35… can I be a niche photographer with a bend for authenticity??? Bottom line… if I learn how to use this camera… will I be more COOL than I am now???

also…

I have a VIVITAR Auto Thyristor 2800-D Flash mechanism thingy that takes batteries and stuff… it has lots of numbers and settings and points to the ceiling if you want and things… it fits onto the OLYMPUS TRIP 35 quite nicely but does that mean it will work??? cause if so, I am more set up for some fun experimental photographic art than I thought…

Any photographers out there… I know there might be one or two around???

I want views, opinions and objections for educational purposes please.

OK, what a can of worms you have opened here!! I LOVEfilm photography, always have, always will-so yes, you will be much cooler than you are now, just by using film. Shutter speeds and apertures do work in a ratio, but there isn’t really enough room here to go through it-I will dig out some reference stuff for you.

Ladees and gennlemen, we have a new film photographer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Trip is an automatic exposure rangefinder. You should set the aperture ring to A when taking photos. The only exception is when using a flash, then you have to set the aperture yourself. If the flash has an auto mode, it will tell you what aperture to set, otherwise you have to work it out using the guide number, that’s probably what all the numbers and such on the back are for.

F-stop and aperture are pretty much the same thing. It’s how much the diaphragm opens up to let light in. The smaller the whole, the wider the depth of field.

Main thing to do would be to remember to set the ISO right. ASA and ISO are the same, so you don’t have to go calculating anything there.

The only issue you might run into is the meter not working. Only one way to find out really, give it a go!

Not sure how focusing works with the Trip, just play with it a bit and you’ll figure it out I suppose.

Oh ur are soo cool right now
    I have one too :)
i picked one up at an op shop 4 $2 just cos it looked cool
    it’s a great lil camera
    and very easy to use
just mak sure ur ISO matches the film u put in
    does that make sence?
it’s an auto focus the pretty “cystal” looking stuff around the lens is
    solar power
    so it needs no battery
there are tones of sites about this little baby
when u get some pix let me knoW we can start a cool group LOL
    have fun
