Ode to a Woman

Barely breathing
beside your still body.
Shallow in and shallow out.
So still i feel my own breath
slide across my lips,
hot and dry,
slipping into rhythm
with your rise and fall.
Now i am home.

My eyes travel the distance of you.
Inching down lithe thighs and moulded calf
to perfectly formed feet.
Toes twitching,
revealing your dream world.
Separate worlds
unfurling behind shrouded eyes
that frolic and flit,
where solitary fantasies mingle,
unspoken secrets find utterance,
fears magnify behind dancing eyelids.

Fingers slender, splayed on open hands.
The gossamer, golden down of your forearm
shimmering in the distant light,
giving way to porcelain shoulders
perfectly sculpted.
Gentle curves of your ivory neck
play with shadow and light.
Skin so translucent your very life visible,
predictable cadence striking just below your jaw,
undulating with each anticipated beat.

I bend towards you hushed,
not to disturb the air around us.
Breathing in deeply,
your warm scent penetrates me,
a balm of both comfort and passion.
Soundless lips slightly parted,
motionless and slack,
still,
corners of your mouth look upwards,
serene and content in secret worlds.
Spun from gold
hair of a goddess.
Each silky strand spills across white linen,
light striking long, glinting locks,
glossy, golden hair a jewelled crown,
your grace ethereal now.
A heavenly beauty.

It’s a hot day here outside and it seems even hotter in here Katherine…with your words :) You paint a picture so very well with your poem. I especilly love the line: “Each silky strand spills across white linen”. A delight to read ~ Anni xox

  • Thanks tons Anni! Happy you liked the piece…..how does your significant other feel about it??!! LOL You picked up on the subtle sexuality….bravo! I don’t think it’s necessary to be graphic, to fill in ALL the blanks for the reader. Writing is about stirring your readers imagination and emotion….I’m pleased I stirred yours!
    Hugs to you.
I must stop by and see some of your new work, it’s been a while since I’ve been on your pages….soon, that’s a promise!

    hope you are well. x : )

  • Hey Tania! Thanks for the comments! I’m glad you like this piece. My first thought was to take a dark turn with this poem….but the contest said ‘Love Poem’ and I didn’t want to get into a debate over what constitutes love. Perhaps I’ll rewrite it one day and take that dark turn!
    Hugs.

Kathi ..if this is the poem you wrote recently I can only say ‘magnificent’ ..so well written dear lady .. very “clear”..very innocent sounding and every word beautiful and elegant , telling a fine story and an age old story of youthful passionate love..it’s very visual..I can see it all and feel it all and remember it all from my own youth and the way you can describe this tenderness between two people is just wonderful..good work dear lady not that i’m any critic and I don’t know much about words or poetry..but it sure sounds good to me.

    A+ for that one!

OK… so this is my 3rd comment on this poem. (2 under the card with the poem.) Kathi, I love this poem and continue to read it over and over again.

In a way, I wish I didn’t love it so… wish that I didn’t understand… but I do… and I pour over the words as if they have the power to resurrect my my own heart and restore what was lost. Or perhaps your words allow me to remember and that is a precious gift.
