Artist's Description

I knew you before you were,
before you became,
before you knew yourself.
We have been always together,
dancing in primordial oceans.
We cling to one another
in that visceral world,
where lives are dispatched
upon primeval waves.

You move to the inside of me,
clinging and mewling,
kneading and kicking,
suckling and crying.
Drinking of my life,
sharing in my soul,
supping on my memories.

As you learn to become
you take pieces of me.
I see my frown
and that look which devastates.
Strawberry hair and brown freckles.
My strength and my wisdom,
all of my fragility and worry.

You move to the outside of me,
clamoring toward the light,
swimming toward the air,
through a gapping, aching chasm
at the end of myself.
And you are manifest in flesh.
Singular now,
you shed your before-life,
finally detaching from me.

But never really gone,
never really apart.
I carry you with me
in the bosom of my heart,
sheltered from slings and arrows,
my soul a safe refuge
for your constant love.

Every day you save my life.
My fine and faithful friend.
