Lewis: Sgoth Niseach - Ness Boat by

According to a local contact this is a half-size Sgoth Niseach (Ness Boat). The last full size Sgoth Niseach (Ness Boat) to be built ‘An Sulaire’ was built by Master Boat Builder, John Murdo Macleod in 1994. The whole story can be found on www.ansulaire.com. “These boats were used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by the fishermen of north east Lewis to win a living from the sea.” John Mordo also built many half size Sgoth Niseach. It is unclear whether this one was built by him. Update 2012: The boat was seemingly damaged a couple of years ago and is no longer in Ness harbour.

Location. Ness harbour, Ness, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, UK. Captured from above, standing on the harbour wall.
Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm, f/10, ISO 100, 1/100s, 22mm. Captured in RAW. Post-pro adjustment of exposure, colour, crop and sharpening in CS4 with NikColorEfex Pro.

I like this for a different perspective.
You don’t see that many from above.
    Nice one Lassie.

  • Larry, thanks! I’m pleased you like the perspective. The ones from the side looked boring as I couldn’t get a good angle from the harbour wall. Slàinte, Kasia

I usually see wooden brown bought on blue water; here it is inverted :o) (or is that sand?)

It is lovely though; I love the colours!

  • Mui-Ling Teh, thank you so much for visiting and for your lovely comment. I was standing on the harbour wall looking down on the boat. The tide was out and the beautiful blue boat was resting on the sand:-)
    Greetings across the miles, Kasia
