Another in my series World from Above, captured during a commercial flight at around 11,000 metres above sea level from Cologne to Munich. The town of Nördlingen lies in the so-called Nördlinger Ries. According to Wikipedia, this is a large area of circular depression in Bavaria thought to formed by a meteorite about 14.3 million–14.5 million years ago in the Miocene. The original rim had an estimated diameter of 24 kilometers. The present floor of the depression is about 100–150 meters below the eroded remains of the rim.
This shot of the town. showing its old circular centre, was captured from a commercial airline at around 10,000 metres above sea level shows the town of Nördlingen and gives you an impression of the surrounding crater or ries crater.
