Islay and its neighbour Jura are famous for their whisky. There are 8 active distilleries on Islay (approx. 3,500 residents) and 1 distillery on Jura (approx. 200 residents).

This view across the sound to the Paps of Jura was captured on the shorefront near the entrance to Bunnahabhain Distillery. Some rocks and abandoned barrels or vats cordoned off the edge of the roadway.

I liked the contrast between the curvy natural hills and the curvy vats in the foreground, as well as between the blue sky and the yellow green weeds.

In the meantime it is a historic shot as the barrels have been replaced by a different display in 2013.

The hills in the distance are the well-known Paps of Jura.

Location: Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay, Scotland, UK.

This is so beautiful and the barrels in the foreground capture the ‘spirit’ of Islay perfectly!

  • Thank you, Fran, for your lovely comment. I liked the idea of “spirit” so much that I’ve changed the title!! Slàinte, Kasia

Well, I’m honoured. Glad to be of inspiration! But I can’t remember what it was called before!!!!!

  • It was called “The Whisky Isles” but I like the idea of capturing the spirit even more:-)

Now, if I drain the barrells will I find a wasted Dram ?
    Perish the thought……?
    As beautiful as usual.
    Thanks Lassie.

  • Larry, I guess every last dram has already been drained from these barrels many a year ago:-) But you can get some of the real stuff just a few steps away!
Thank you for your kind words, my friend.

I bet there is still an amazing smell inside the barrels. Lovely evocative image.

  • Stuart, thank you very much.
I’m sure there is still a smell but I admit I didn’t stick my nose in!
