“Catch a Wave, and you’ll be sitting on top of the World!”

Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, performed by the Beach Boys Catch a Wave

This guy isn’t “surfin’ USA” but catchin’ a wave on an icy cold river through the centre of Munich! The air temperature was below 10°C and water far below that but a whole group of guys and gals vying for their turn!! This wave is created as the small river comes out from a bridge into the English Garden. They don’t ride the wave until it reaches the shore but try to keep riding it before it breaks just behind them. The surfing area is literally only a few yards wide and has solid stone walls on each side – with bigs signs “Swimming and Surfing forbidden” “Mortal Danger” above their heads!! But the thrills and spills are what it is all about. And there is always an audience on the bridge above where I caught this action.

  • Paul, I’m not sure how you managed to see this and comment before I’d even saved it:-) But you were quick off the mark! I’m thrilled that you like this, given your amazing gallery of surfing shots!! It is a tad colder here than in Rainbow Bay:-))

    Awesome capture Kasia.

  • Thank you, Richard. These guys are amazing to watch. It is difficult to get the right light to capture them in action but I was lucky that day.

awesome action shot Kasia!! i read the description, and it makes me wonder what would happen besides hypothermia if they experience a bad fall. fingers crossed. well done here kasia!

  • Adrian, somehow I missed your comment a while back. I don’t want to know either what would happen if things went wrong under those conditions. There is a casualty on that river every so often, but mostly not those regulars. They don’t go alone and there are nearly always spectators around (I think that is part of the adrenalin push). But that day there was one guy with a bare head, hands and feet – when he fell off he continued to swim in the water and get some kind of kick out of swimming back upstream!! And I’m not exaggerating about the temperatures that day. Warm regards my friend across the miles!
