Unless you have been somewhere so remote, it is difficult to imagine. Before I flew to the Hebrides that year I had decided I must travel to the end of this road that I had seen in Google Earth and take a photo. I recommend you look at the map to see how remote this is! If you need fire services, an ambulance or school look how far it is to the next wee town! But the views are spectacular and it is perfectly calm on a day like this.
Location: Loch Amhlasaraigh, near Lochportain and Hoebeg, North Uist, Scotland, UK. Taken from the single-track road between Lochportain and Hoebeg. This view is out over Loch Amhlasaraigh, a sea loch in the isolated north-east of Norh Uist. The tide is out showing the rusty coloured seaweed on the rocky shores.

Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Captured in RAW.

It does look a gorgeous location :)

  • Dave, thank you too! If you ever go to North Uist you have to travel out this road. It was quite amazing. But I wouldn’t want to live there, to be honest.

It is indeed a road worth travelling – I remember seeing some car stickers with ‘I love Lochportain’ on them but never managed to get one!
    Beautiful shimmer on the water.
    Brings back many happy memories:-)

  • Richard, it was amazing and so empty and serene. Did you travel to both the ends of the road? Didn’t see a Lochportain sticker anywhere but maybe I should create an RB t-shirt:-) Thank you, Kasia

Yes we did indeed go to the end of each road and you describe it well – serene.
Do you know, I think I’ll pop a photo onto RB of a scene from the Lochportain road!!:-)
