Salt production has been a major factor for the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire since the 16th century.
While there may be high-tech sorting machines once the salt is there, the stages before take time rather than technology: Huge salt pans flooded with sea water letting time evaporate the water. Information about sea salt production.
The water in the foreground is pink due to the algae concentration. This is not pollution – as the salinity increases different algae proliferate. The pink algaie also influence the colour of flamingos and shrimps, for example.
