So well done, really on the mark. I was on a train in Long Island, NY once and there was some engine trouble. Middle of winter, stuck for an hour. The train emptied of maybe 200 passengers to smoke on the station platform while we waited….and about three non-smokers cozied inside! Infuriating really. You’ve done a fine thing here.

Wow, this really makes me think, Well Portrayed Karsten.
I find it significant how you have represented smoking as an addiction, and a force of habit, I can also Identify Dependency, Highly Affecting, I think that this Picture should be displayed in every Junior High and High School throughout North America, Very well done Karsten, I have decided to quit smoking I have a two year plan, cold turkey if it kills me, two years

Me and my wife were just talking about this. Love it.

great picture :) but smokers are hardly outsiders in the larger sense of the word. they do not earn less than non-smokers or have worse housing or employment prospects. their meeting places and gravestones are not daubed with grafitti or firebombed. they are not prevented from joining social groups or professional bodies.
the only way in which smokers are outsiders is that they are prevented from carrying out an antisocial activity around others.
or am i taking this too seriously lol?
Jacqueline Baker
I agree with Dan but then i an an ex smoker and they are the worst to complain after conversion LOL…..anyway great image Karsten love your work!!

Beautiful painting Karsten. At one point in time, a person was an (outsider )if they did not smoke. Today, they are an (outsider )if they do. Why are some social actions considered unacceptable like smoking but yet heavy drinking is not? Good question.
Karsten Stier
I’ll drink to that…..............

wow. this is excellent.

Too true, but, even when I was one, I didn’t mind; except at bars. I think it’s very wrong to tell people who are paying $5 or more for a “Shot” (aka large thimble) of whiskey that they can’t smoke while drinking it.. Plus, I always had more trouble from the smoke machines they used, which weren’t banned, than 100 people in a room lighting up, anyway.
However, in restaurants, theatres, etc. I think it’s a bloody good idea to restrict smoking. When they started doing that, I started having a lot less colds and ear infections. So did my kids!
And, no, for anyone who might think otherwise, reading this comment, I was not smoking around them and giving them ear infections. But, I bet I smoked in restaurants where other people’s children were infected, before I learned better. Nasty thought!
Anyway, all that being said, I really like the style of this .. this .. drawing? Painting? Well, whatever it is, it’s well done.
