There is a very funny story behind this Red-bellied Woodpecker. A couple of weeks back, my husband & I were awaken by a tapping on the window. The tapping almost instantly became a banging. One of our windows, the top, is not completely covered with a shade & the uncovered spot is where I noticed this red-bellied woodpecker flapping his wings. I figured he was seeing the reflection of the Autumn trees in the window. I tried to chase him away, but he kept coming back. Later that day, I had all the windows in the house open and this guy was going from screen to screen, chirping away at us.

He finally left, but he was back the next day. I left all the shades down in the house & covered the open area with a towel. That seemed to keep him away. A few days go by and tap, tap, tap, there he is again. This continued on and off for days. The funny thing is this guy has been on our property since we moved in last year and he has never acted like this before or even sat anywhere on the house that I know of.

You are going to think I am crazy, but I finally think I have figured out why he taps on the window only on certain days, you see every day that he has tapped on the window the bird feeders have been empty. He has never tapped so far, when there is food available to him. I have a bad knee that has be giving me some trouble lately, so I have not been able to make it to the feeders, which are down a hill in my yard, everyday, as I usually do.

I have seen some pretty amazing and comical things since I have been photographing & observing wildlife, but if I am right, this guy tops the list!!

This is a most delightful image! This beautiful bird is very smart, reminding you to fill the feeders! When we lived in Connecticut, we had a woodpecker that would come and peck on the vinyl siding of our house. I think he finally got the message that it wasn’t wood and left.

  • Thanks for the comments, Dot! I love my backyard wildlife…they are so comical at times!! :>)
