This tower dates from the XIVcentuary !
It dominates the river Rance estuary and its height is 27 meters!
its name comes from the breton : “steir dor”which means : door of the river.
ITS A FORTRESS AND HOLDS THE MUSEUM OF THE :CAP HORNIERS
The tower is sitting on a rock and dominates the RANCE river.
The original foundations are roman, and composed of 3 towers, linked together!
From the revolution until 1811, it was known as a prison for the french soldiers and the british prisoners, and one can check it by looking at the graffitis inside.
Now it is a nice little museum and you can see retraced , the discovery of the CAP HORN!
And you will see represented , the everyday life in those great ships!
The first french man to have crossed the CAP HORN was : GROUIN DE BEAUCHENES, a man from st malo in 1698, who tried to establish relationships with Peru and Chili!
