DisCo Project : This Is My Father's World by Karirose

Posted on May 25, 2011

This is a bit of a long read, but I would appreciate your thoughts if you would care to put the time into reading it. Thank you.

A little over a year ago, Janis Zroback began a group called the Disintegration Project (DisCo).

For all appearances it looked as if I had not only forgotten the project but dropped out; but, when the project began it was the beginning of spring in my part of the world so not much disintegration happened. A little fading from the sun, a little old coffee or tea poured over, used tee bags inserted inside the rolls and a sprinkle of water whilst watering plants.

One Bundle Hung ever so patiently on my fence for months. Another bundle, which for some reason I failed to take a picture of was a group of papers a company was going to throw away so I grabbed a couple of boxes so I have plenty of scrap paper. :) I placed a half dozen pages or so on a metal box, inserted used coffee grounds in between the sheets of paper and held it all down with a rusting basket. And waited. Watered it a bit, poured more coffee. And waited.

Finally after a hectic winter I decided to open my bundles. I was disappointed. I read of a fellow bubbler Lynette Shelly who used wine to stain as well as tea and coffee. So even though I had unbundled I laid them on the ground and poured the wine on allowing it to flow however it wanted.

Once I gathered them up, I still wasn’t sure what I was going to do with all this lovely stuff. So I began by tracing some lines with a fine tip black pen and found it began to resemble an abstract world.

From then on a favorite hymn from my childhood, This Is My Father’s World" rang through my head every time I worked on the project.Hence the title.

Soon the project took on a life of it’s own and I just followed. I tore pieces of yellow scrap paper and pieces of copied music (which had been in my various bundles) and glued them around where it seemed to tell me where it wanted all these pieces to go. I began by gluing them all on a piece of sheet music staff paper that I had included in a bundle that sat under my non-functioning lawn mower. I printed out a couple of stanzas from the song and printed them out on both the yellow scrap paper and the scrap paper from the previously mentioned company.

I added a bit of water color (a medium I keep saying I will not use, but it continues to pop up in a few of my works) for emphasis in some areas.

It became quite rough around the edges I but cropped it anyway to be neat and tidy but it seems to take away from the piece.

I’ve included the uncropped version just to show it. I’m not sure how to keep the unevenness that adds to the project and not show the ground on which the picture was taken on. Perhaps I’ll glue it on some black paper also from my scrap paper box.

So here’s my first DisCo project. Comments and constructive criticism welcomed.

Thank you for reading this long journal. Your time and thoughts are much appreciated.

I think it went extraordinarily well Karirose….it is exactly what the project is all about..I look forward to seeing more work from you and from all in the Disco group…

  • Karirose:

Thanks so much, Janis! It was a long time coming that’s for sure! Thanks to you and this project I’ve got a couple more ideas floating around in my head. :) I’ve just begun the idea that you have promoted about keeping an art journal so I’ve got to get the thoughts down soon.

  • Karirose:

Holy Smoke! I usually read the “Weekly Wrap” but hadn’t thus far. Talk about blowing me out of the water! Goodness! I’m so glad that the DisCo project got mentioned. Thanks for pointing it out and for all your help with the group. :)

Oh wow this is a stellar story and completed piece. ‘a life of it’s own’ seems so connected to YOU!

  • Karirose:

Thanks so much Lina! It did indeed take on it’s own life and yet be so connected to me. An insight I had not put together in my head at all! :D
