I’ve always been fascinated by the big face at Luna Park , Melbourne. I have never been tempted to go in, but the face looked so fun to draw. Not sure if this is supposed to be some version of a clown. My painting was not intended to be scary, but it has turned out that way. I’ve heard that little children are afraid to go inside, through the mouth/gateway.
I did this in a Bill Kerr’s painting class . It was done in Acrylics on canvas. I used brushes and a palette knife. It still has that unfinished look about, it after living with it for a while and receiving some positive feedback from a friend, whose opinion I respect, I have decided that I’m not going to work on it any more.
I may attempt it again, since this one is relatively small.

I have been a professional artist since 1990, starting out doing pencil portrait commissions. These days I have my own back yard studio, where I work towards future exhbitions, and teach weekly classes & workshops in watercolour and acrylics as well as drawing.
My studio is located in Hobson’s Bay ( Altona Meadows) , Victoria

definately turned out scary! Don’t think I’d want to go in there :)

  • Thanks, Dianne ! I hadn’t intended it to turn out scray, because I see it rather as a cheerful, colourful image. It just turned out like this. I may have another go. I’m sure the next one would be a better representation, and not as scary. : )

Ha Ha! What a challenge and it’s easy to see you had a lot of fun doing it Karin. It does seem like a strange sort of ‘welcoming gateway’ to put in front of small children!!!

  • Thanks for your lovely words, and feedback, Lynda. I think the entrance to Luna Park is rather over the top, but that’s what I like about it. Strange , that I never felt the urge to go inside. I really should go and see what’s hidden inside the walls, besides the roller coaster, which you can see over the top of the wall. I won’t ever go on a roller coaster again. I’m too chicken, after trying it once up in Queensland. I think this face(of my painting) is what my face looked like on the roller coaster, ha, ha.

WOW WELL DONE MUST BE AN INTERESTING PLACE lIZ

  • Thank you , Liz ! Funny that I’ve never been curious about going inside. I guess there is just so much other good stuff to see in Melbourne. Perhaps I can trick my hubby to go with me, under the guise that it would be a good place to take photos. ( he is a keen amateur photographer)

This is scary – really and great – I don;t think it’s unfinished Karin

  • Thank you, Karen – it’s great to get some feedback from people. Sometimes I have no idea if something is finished. I often like that unfinished look. Often a painting looses something when you put in every bit of detail. : )

Your previous work of reclining nude was on my art stream (also very good) and when I clicked to it saw this one. On the thumbnail I thought it the head of the Statue of Liberty. I love it, even though I learned it is called something else. It is so raw, so scary, so volitile, it made me think of how I feel about my country (usa) right now. I don’t want to go there either. this is awesome and I love it just the way it is. It has a bit of the reactionary art feel and look.

  • Thank you very much for the great comment. Yes, it looks kind of like the statue of liberty, made up into a clown. We actually have a Luna Park in Sydney as well. You can google Luna Park, and will find photos of the entranceways(Sydney or Melbourne, they are similar). This is very much an Australian icon. I had only a limited time to work on this, and working with a palette knife was fun. I really didn’t know what I was doing, when I painted it, but that is often the case, and sometimes it works, I suppose. Anyway, thank you again for your kind words. I am very sorry that you feel that way about your country. I used to live in Canada, and now I’m very glad I live in Australia. I really love it here. It has it’s problems, but overall, I feel very lucky to live here.
