Maia 10 min - Drawing Day 2011 by Karin Zeller

Maia 10 min - Drawing Day 2011 by

I usually go to Newport Life drawing on Saturdays in the afternoon. Normally I don’t post my quick sketches, but since it’s for Drawing Day 2011, I thought I would make an exception.

I have been a professional artist since 1990, starting out doing pencil portrait commissions. These days I have my own back yard studio, where I work towards future exhibitions, and teach weekly classes & workshops in watercolour and acrylics as well as drawing.
My studio is located in Hobson’s Bay ( Altona Meadows) , Victoria

Beautiful – absolutely stunning work Karin. Do you put the wash down first and then do the sketch? It’s a lovely effect which ever way round you do it.

  • Thank you for your interesting comment and kind feedback, Lynda! I often put down a fast watercolour wash to get a quick impression of the basic shape of the pose, then add the line right away with an Artliner ink pen.

It works beautifully! Might even try it myself at our Life Drawing group! I miss the next one because we will be away! (Sigh)! I think Life Drawing is fantastic, and helps with all aspects of art work.

  • Totally agree with your statement, Lynda! I love how you have to finish the drawing quickly, because once the pose is finished , there is no photo to work from. You quickly learn to focus and really “be in the moment”. I love working large in charcoal, but the little pen and wash drawings are less of a problem, as they accumulate…I do tend to fill up a lot of sketch books with life drawings, however, but there are usually at least one or two that I love.
