Yesterday morning I joined Gwen’s class for painting “en plein air” as the French say. There is nothing like this experience. This is only the third time I’ve actually painted in the open air, just to explain why this looks more amateur than some of my other work. In spite of it’s flaws, I was still happy with this spontaneous sketch. I used pen and watercolour wash, and I think I like that combination and plan to use it more often.

Update (March 20th, 2011): I entered this in the Qenos art show, which is an annual competition held by Hobson’s Bay Arts Society. It won 1st prize in watercolour, and also sold. Well, goes to show you, that a little painting, done in just a short time can still kick ass, lol. :)

Karin this scene is wonderfully “real”…spontaneous was definitely the way to go here!

  • Thank you, Jim! I appreciate the kind words. I do plan to paint more local scenes, since this is what most people around here like to buy.

beautiful breezy little whimsical work…so fresh as if one where on holiday…bloody seagulls…lol ’bless em"

  • Thanks, Loui! Always enjoy your comments! Yeah, in spite of their being so common, I actually love seagulls. They are fun to paint and draw, but the darn things didn’t hold still.

This is a beautiful painting, perfect for a childrens book, maybe telling a story of how the painter speaks with the seagull?

  • Thank you for your kind words and suggestions. I have always wanted to illustrate a children’s book. I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen in the near future.
