Up the hill you can see an old castle.
Castle Hoheneck is situated in the east of Germany.
It, however, was used as a prison for many decades.
Most of all women who either wanted to escape from East Germany or led a dissolute life ended up behind the bars for some years. At the moment the castle is looking for a new owner.
There is a funny story which happened after the reunification of the two German states. In the early 1990s the prison was closed and all the inmates were taken to other places. For the first time the public had the opportunity to visit this terrible place. One day a group of students took part in a guided tour, suddenly they heard someone knock at the gate. They answered the door and saw a woman outside. She had come to serve her sentence (one week). The students thought they were in candid camera.
The judge who had imposed this fine on the woman, had not known about the prison’s “fate”.
