lost and found

In a room as dark as ink, I saw her peaky face
she was hiding in the corner, where the ink was yet to grace
I noticed she was holding, yes, a paintbrush dipped in black
a revelation struck me, like lighting up a match

I saw she’d painted herself in and left her soul no space
she’d hedged herself and placed a bet that she had no last ace
I realised her error and her malady I faced
I brought to her a new brush and cad red and yellow paint

I eased her up and out she stretched her long and slender limbs
she opened like a butterfly about to spread her wings
her crumpled face looked down at me with eyes that once knew hope
and together we began to paint in giant yellow strokes
