some childhood memories

Along the old back road out of town
Where the great goannas scowled and prowled
We noticed things, like trees and bees
Stopping to see whatever we pleased

There was a hole beneath my feet
Our old white Holden was pretty neat
It had no windscreen to shield bugs either
At six in the morning we’d fairly shiver

Banana bread not made in an oven
Squashed bananas drowned in honey
Listened to races and jockey’s colours
Visitors, prisoners, drunks and others

Fishing on the breakwall dad
Hugs goodnight were all we had
Swimming all day long was me
Bobbing in the blue green sea

Cockatoos, cats and crocodiles
Pets we loved and some that died
The sunshine gave us freckled smiles
Always doors were open wide

some childhood memories
