a cinderella story

she sings in the silence while sweat stings her eyes
her cheeks glisten pinkly a ruddy disguise
stokes embers while coughing on putrrified smoke
the dank dampish air hangs and sticks in her throat
cackling crescendos and threadbare her clothes
she evades the temptation that bids her to wallow
her skin becomes pale shaded sunlessly sallow
her pillow all crumpled and stained dirty yellow
a princess in waiting, a heart never fainting
her stature like one of the ancients in Rome
holds fast to her dreams, writing down all her poems
alone in the presence of sisters so shallow
who toast as they roast on their almond marshmallow
poor princess they scoff, as they look in their mirrors
laugh bitter thoughts, tweeting twisted harsh twitters
while she in her frock torn to pieces and blistered
forgives her tormentors, her very own sisters

and what is the lesson I learn from this story
that those who cause pain are so endlessly boring
you can’t hold back goodness and kindness and love
without burning a hole in your own poor old heart
and where there is hatred and honour is missing
there is still a sweet flower whose name is ‘forgiveness’
