Birthday wishes

Unrefreshed, my body shifts under the weight
Of the white down and velvet
I mix tenderness with tears
A potent blend
It is my day
On this day I was born
And have lived the number
Of forty seven years
My eyes are tired
And my energy has dimmed
And yet I know the earth now
As more exceedingly lovely
Than ever I did before in my youth
In those early days
My crust had not been broken
My eyes had not been opened
My life had not been spent in so many ways
Today I will celebrate nature
The sun, the moon and the stars
Will be my heroes
My children I will stand in awe
Of your grace and beauty and youth
Your strength and life bubbling away
I will marvel a while
By oceans edge and review
The delicate balance of birds, stony hedges
And she-oaks with all the medicine around me
Surely I will feel my strength renewed
And my flesh less torn
A tonic for they eyes
And a restfulness replacing the restlessness
Of all that was to be
And is not yet
