It comes and goes, does winter’s cold, through thickest fogs it bears down grim and unforgiving…bitter, as are the souls of winter…stiffened by resolve to chill the air and cause a drift of snow, a layer of sleet, to tear bare feet where just beneath the shallows lies the shoal, sharp ever-present, delighting in the merry hell of chilblains and bunions, burning skin and blisters….feisty in it’s love of biting and churning…the stench of a dead bird who’s wingtip exposes itself to the missing sun, finds it’s way to frozen nostrils, a reminder that there is no kindness left in winter’s brutal heart, as is the way with nature, survival is only for fittest men and wildest birds…do we tame our hearts, no let them wild and free, unfettered and unburdened, unsullied by the snow…fly high beyond the branches and touch the sun if wings are strong enough to let you…find a rainbow and lodge between it’s colours until the storms are over, for there is no place for you in the sullied snow. Move on little winged ones to the fairer pastures that are greener, for the winters are not good for souls of summer and of spring, beware the wolves that hunger for the wings of little birds, who unawares are pounced upon for dinner…beware and join your brothers in the fields above the others where the fight for seed is worth it and your new day has begun….flee fast the soul of winter for it has nothing to offer but a wither of your wing and a scoffing of your song…be quiet and sing your songs….be less bitter and grow fitter….for your fight will be with winter, when the summer sun is gone.

Wow, Karin, your writing is beautiful. The birds and light souls do love Spring, don’t they?

This is a beautiful song, right here. Perhaps the birds are singing it now:

“…flee fast the soul of winter for it has nothing to offer but a wither of your wing and a scoffing of your song…be quiet and sing your songs….be less bitter and grow fitter….for your fight will be with winter, when the summer sun is gone.” — Karin Taylor

  • thank you so much Frannie, when something is brewing inside of only takes a few seconds to pen with rushing fingers whirling across the keyboard in frenzied glances upward to see what mind is saying…and it unfurls sometimes like a flower, sometimes like a frond…sometimes like an ink pool…in winter’s frozen pond…..hugs and love…karin xoxox

beware the wolves that hunger for the wings of little birds…..what a great line, its full of great lines i thoroughly enjoyed this karin it has that sort of timeless feel and mystery about it that you do so well, it takes you somewhere and makes you smile……i love it

  • since young the wolves did visit….my bed beside they lapped….their pinkish tongues and reddish eyes upon my soul did wrap…i challenged them in darkness…i spoke my solemn song….the shadows disappeared tho when
challenged by my song. …big hugs brotherJ …i know the winter is not your friend so much either….i hope a warm day will soon remove the chill of winter’s soul :) you…always make me feel warm brother :)
