The Little Dreamer

Susan resigned from all her stations within the plant, a little smile of anticipation as she contemplated the possibilities that lay ahead. New adventures around ever corner! The mysteries of life about to unravel. She flew past the town centre bustling with early morning energy and felt a new lease of life, taking a deep breath she plunged into the heart of a red rose fragrant with love’s promise.

Covered in yellow dust Susan wriggled about, revelling in her little plump rolls until she surprised herself with a sneeze, shaking off the excess pollen. Weighted down in the yellow dust, she tried to fly on but found herself too heavy and heady with dreams, so rested a while, under a clover, nodding off for what seemed like hours.

Back at the plant, the office was all abuzz with gossip about Susan and how hopeless she was, always daydreaming and falling asleep. They felt the business had suffered enough because she was lazy and forgetful, always off with the fairies. Many of them were very glad Susan had tendered her resignation to pursue her dreams of adventure. Some were a little envious of Susan, as the monotony of the daily grind wore them down.

Susan woke to a nightmare. She suspected whatever was jolting her little body around in a washing machine spin dry action must be a dream, but the headspins were real and that motion sick feeling, could you dream something so vividly like that?

Susan reached out her arms in the hope of grabbing anything that might steady her but unfortunately instead, she slapped two ants simultaneously in the head, knocking them senseless in the vortex.

Meanwhile, back at the plant life went on as normal, worker bees collecting and delivering pollen and the executive bees delegating and working on improving yield per annum, when suddenly the sentinel bees who were on guard, in panicked tones, delivered a message that resulted in a chaos. The humans were coming in white suits to exterminate the plant, they would be clearing the area for a brand new housing estate.

Susan, all topsy turvy felt rather ill by this time and just when she thought she was about to throw up, the tornado spat her out …. She landed in a very dark place. Poor Susan tried her best to scramble out but just as she reached the cave opening a shadow fell on her and little Susan’s light faded.

The human was in pain and on removing his wooly sock from his gumboot, he noticed a tiny sting in his sole, it was Susan’s … He shook his boot and out came little Susan… She looked different from her recent brush with danger, the tornado had given her a new look with what appeared to be additional wings…. the environmentalist realised this was his chance to put an end to the new development. He was a research scientist, and he knew a new species when he saw it.

It all ended well and although the bees at the plant never heard from Susan again, or knew of her sacrifice and tragic end, they lived happily ever after, all because Susan was a dreamer.
