Street lamps

audio recording of this poem here

In cool night air
street lamps glow
their mellow lemon best
while stars sleep resting
on a bed of utter jet blackness
there’s comfort in the sky
and those lamps are friends of mine
on every inky journey
familiar sights at night
the special signs you look for
to gauge everything’s alright

in outback towns
the lights are warm
red dust in your hair
On coastal nights
the lights shine bright
in cool clean atmosphere
I think street lamps
are friendly giants
who serve to guard and guide
visitors and newcomers
who visit towns at night
leading us into the place
where we begin new life
