...things I've learned so far
I’ve been reflecting upon some things I’ve read about Stefan Sagmeister, and one of the things he does is write lots of lists, i do that also…. he wrote a list once about things he’d learned….and i just had the impulse to do the same thing….
Perhaps you’d like to reflect also on what you’ve learned, and please feel free to write your own and link it back to this writing…. or perhaps just share it with me here, anything special you’ve learned….
...things I've learned so far belongs to the following groups:
All Out Emotion, All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical and Light In The Darkness- angry people are hurting people
(they hurt themselves and others)
- picking flowers is less rewarding than leaving them grow and watching them sway in the breezes
- there is comfort in familiar routines and rituals
- children can surprise you with their wisdom
- the more children you have, the greater becomes your capacity for love
- taking risks is never easy but always you feel proud for doing so
- I have gratitude toward those who’ve let me down, the human spirit rises up on such occasions to meet challenges and accomplishes much
- In seeking to avoid challenges I am choosing not to grow
- Bitterness is ugly…forgive and learn to love your enemy….and move on
- God speaks through anything if we are listening and open
- Movies provide real insights into the human condition if you reflect on them they can become windows to the soul
- Wisdom equals experience
- Being stubborn and unforgiving takes more energy than admitting a wrong and moving on
- Rainbows and sunsets can provide moments for reflection and cost nothing but a moment spent living in the moment
- Music can remind us what is important in life
- Musicians are healers
- To live and let live is an excellent idea and quite practical
- My mother saved lives through nursing, my father saved lives through policing, I nurture hearts and encourage people
- Hugs are healing
- My heart sings songs that no one can hear
- I cry tears that no one can see
- My life has a purpose, unknown yet to me
- I love the smell of salty air, the sand between my toes, the mystery of the sea
- I am on a journey to learn about you and about me

Here is something I have learned in life: That you should never compare yourself to the best others can do but to the best that YOU can do! :)
Karin Taylor

thx so much Julie, a great truth indeed this is! I appreciate it very much….. to reach our highest potential is a wonderful thing to aspire to :) x
BlueKnot
Old Chinese Proverb: The man who is full of venom most of all poisons himself.
Karin Taylor
replied
I do love this saying BlueKnot…. it’s so true…brilliant…. considering i had a nightmare last night too…in which an old gentlement covered me in the venom of a lionfish… very interesting and scary dream. He was full of bitterness and also managed to poison me, but it looks like i survived to tell the gruesome tale hey…lol… :) thx so much!

Its in writing lists that unknown truths about ourselves come forth… this happened to me when I wrote my profile about the things that make up me and someone pointed out a glaring omission! Thanks for sharing with us here on RB. xx
Karin Taylor
replied
this is so true in and of itself, there is something about writing that brings about understanding and clarification…. i’m sure i’ve missed lots of things too…i only took 5-10 quick mins to pen this, but i love hearing these other observations…because they enrich and inspire and encourage us all the more teacup! ;) thank you :)

I wanted to add a few more things I have learned in life. I just kept thinking about this and had to come back to share. :)
1) I have learned that KINDNESS is much, much, MUCH more important that perfection.
2) The greater a persons sense of guilt is… the greater their need is to cast blame onto others!
and…
3) The absolute worst pain for me is watching someone else in pain.
Karin Taylor

these are very sobering thoughts which i’ll reflect on …..i love them, thank you for coming back Julie!!! it’s more treasure :) x

I love this list! One of the things stood out for me:
Wisdom equals experience
However, some people get confused with this one and I should point out that:
Experience does not equal wisdom.
Some people mess up so much in their lives (like me) that they assume they can now pass on great advice. Unless something has been learned by our mistakes, we faulty humans should never presume that we are done learning, and therefor can start teaching.
I had come to realize this when I had two friends that asked me for advice, because they were both in a situation to which I worked through a half a dozen times before. They told me this made me wise. I had to tell them that it just made me messed up and I still have some learning to do. Lesson learned.
Karin Taylor
replied
thx very much….. that’s really true…. experience doesn’t equal wisdom … treading the path doesn’t always result in wisdom… there are many experiences I’ve had which i would not be able to help another through, bar giving them an insight into how i dealt with it at the time and upon reflecting on these things later on in life…it gives a certain amount of perspective. sometimes the pain is too great to want to revive the experience in order to reflect upon it, sometimes the experiences may not seem important enough to ponder… and those that live in denial and tend not to reflect upon their experience, may not be able to offer us wisdom…. apart from cliches and sayings that are rote-learned. I prefer to delve into my own heart and learn the mysteries for myself, often tho, a saying will project onto the wall….and i will see whether there are parts of my life that can use the old wise saying, whether it lines up or not…and i do in fact find those helpful at times… as long as I’m not told that my feelings are unimportant or that i need to toughen up and wise up… I find that not reflecting upon things results in a vault build up and an impenetrable bridge that cannot be crossed over to another person, I want to be a bridge, rather than a brick wall I suppose, and that is at the crux of a lot of the decisions i make. I do remain aloof toward many people that have hurt me, and I won’t easily find my way back to them. I have found there are those that will not be moved and will not change for it suits them… and I realise that I am not from that tribe and I move on :) x

How wonderful Karin.. One really important thing I have learned is that my life is so much better for knowing you. I have some really hard issues to address in my family, and I am going to go and write. I have spent countless sleepless nights, crying and tossing and turning over what I can do. Just by sharing this you have opened up new possibilities, and something I was considering was to write about the issues. The pain is so overwhelming that I have stopped working. Which is not a good thing so hopefully by writing things down I can get things more sorted at least to a point where I can work again.
Karin Taylor
replied
....i am thinking of you Cate, i’ll bmail you very soon …. hang in there, you are a wonderful mum…. when the time is right…. you will know what to do…. x

Flowers swaying in the breeze: you must have been looking at my lawns, covered in tall yellow “weeds”. I’m happy to leave them there for the time being :)
Karin Taylor
replied
Lol yes it was your lawn in my minds eye :)
I have a wee tinge of regret when I lift a flower from it’s natural world to beautify my 4 walls…. Lucky I’m nit the one who has to mow all the tops off like you… But from another perspective… Weeds might have the appearance of popularity due to sheer numbers but they cause chaos in the garden…and we need to keep them in check or they choke the roses :)
Alexandra Felgate
Karin you are one of the most amazing people I have ever come across! This list is embodies your caring, loving and inspiring nature, thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us all.
This has really given me pause, I am a compulsive list writer, everything from groceries and to-do lists to ideas for my artwork, inspirational quotes and random thoughts, but never have I written a list of things I’ve learned…..its now in the list of lists to write (lol)

So nice of you to say so Karin…but I’m not as forgiving as you…
Karin Taylor
replied
aw, i have plenty of grudges…..it’s letting them go that is the hardest thing….i think at first pain has to be validated before we can let it go. Often, i find when someone acknowledges the hurt, I can let it go more easily…. but life is hard, never easy…and I’m struggling and battling my way through it too x
Jewd
What a beautiful, uplifting spirit you have bought to the earth sweetheart..love yr heart..hugs …xooo

Karin, Thank you so much for sharing! It’s wonderful to read!
lacitrouille
Absolutely right Karin, about neednding to acknowledge the hurt to better let go of it…Sometimes, if I can’t forgive, I find acceptance brings the peace that I need. :)

Beautiful to read the truth you are wise and you have a great soul :)
valentina63
what an incredible list . Dont know how i missed this. Much wisdom and spiritual generosity and warmth in your words Karen . I loved so many of the points but this one “I have gratitude toward those who’ve let me down, the human spirit rises up on such occasions to meet challenges and accomplishes much” reminded me of this song and thought you would appreciate it . its near the last line that it is the most powerful.
Thank you for this wonderful reminder about whats important in life . :)xo
