The Goanna of Kings Cross
I’ve been musing for some time about my Dad’s memoirs and whether to upload them here on the Bubble…. here’s one goanna story he wrote
The Goanna of Kings Cross belongs to the following groups:
Animal Kingdom and Who are YOU to Judge?a short memoir from my father
...this happened a long, long time ago… and if dad had his time over, he wouldn’t of course, be catching and selling goannas to pet shops, but this was back in those days….
.....
In the mid 1960’s at Tottenham we were collecting goannas (by scaling trees and catching them ourselves in the bush) and forwarding them to Sam at the Pet Shop in Sydney inside a large locked box via the train each fortnight to make a few extra bucks.
On one occasion Sam requested an urgent shipment and so my mate Rex and I took off in Rex’s new Holden, bound for Sydney with a boot full of goannas.
The goannas (we called them googies ) were in a hessian bag, as the wooden box was too big for the boot.
On arrival at the Pet Shop, an inspection of the boot revealed the googies had escaped from their hessian bags, we managed to catch and deliver 14 …..............but 1 was missing!
Further search revealed the goanna had climbed from the boot, up the back seat and had clawed a hole in the roof lining, where he was firmly stuck, very unwilling to be dislodged….
We left him there, and drove to the Kings Cross Fire Station where we were staying the night with Sal’s parents …. the goanna still lodged firmly in the roof of the car…..
Next morning we found the googie had come out of the lining and we were able to catch him, thank goodness.
We thought it wasn’t really worth our while taking him back out to the Petersham Pet Shop, so instead, we hatched a plan to sell off the goanna on the street.
We waited in the Fire Station doorway and accosted the first pedestrian to come past,
“pssssssssssttttttttttt, wanna buy a goanna for 5 pounds ($10) ?” we offered…......
He didn’t hesitate, and after we showed him how to handle it (behind the neck and base of tail) off he went, grinning like a Cheshire cat!
We scooted upstairs to the balcony overlooking the Cross (Kings Cross) and saw our customer enter the famous Kings Cross Nightclub called The Pink Pussycat
Shortly after, a large number of patrons exited the club onto the footpath.
Years later I read in the Sunday paper about a huge goanna living in the rooftops of The Cross, feasting on rats and pigeons…..............
hmmm

O.K. what is a goanna?...the story is really interesting, but I don’t have a picture in my mind of these animals that you can sell on a street corner, and which you can capture 14 at one time…or are you pulling our group legs?... :))
Karin Taylor

good question Janis, was just about to post a link.. lol
you can see some goannas here in wiki
nah, not pulling your leg … lol… it’s a true story… promise!

Great story!!! Dad used to send us to sleep when we were kids with stories about his rabbit trapping (accompanied by his dog, Socks, who used to tow him and his bike home when Dad got tired!), appropriating watermelons and the like… ah, the good old days…
Thanks for sharing, Karin!

oh wow, i think that’s wonderful, the telling of stories like that to kids… would’ve been wonderful… love to hear more about your stories Mieke…!! :)

I thought it might be a lizard…where I grew up we have iguanas, but they are huge and very fierce looking as they are prehistoric…they are only used as food though…
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Janis, yeah iguanas might be a similar thing, goannas can get quite large, i’ve seen Dad with one or two almost as big as himself, and he’s 6ft tall..i’m guessing these goannas he took to sydney were about the length of his arm, but i’ll have to actually ask him about the size…. I’ve seen a goanna clamp down on his hand… and it bleeds and bleeds..they must have very sharp teeth I think. I believe they are related to iguanas or at least the name ‘goanna’ comes from the word iguana, and they can grow up to 1.6 metres or 5.2 feet (about my height)
Here’s another good link about them

LOL! Now this story sounds familiar, bar the fat goanna living in the roof years later!! Thanks Sas, made my night – grinning from ear to ear! The joys of living in the sticks, aye?!! loL!

lol…well it was you what reminded me of this whole thing at the start …. so i really have you to thank , as i wsn’t clear on this whole story… and it was fun getting it all from the ‘horses mouth’...i love to make him tell us stories again and again… i could listen forever and never get bored… he is such a great storyteller… and so was his pa… :) xxx

Gosh super fab Karin! re goannas !aww we have them all the time here LOL, even climbing up on the roof which is more that 2 stories at the peak.,
Karin Taylor
replied
aw, do you ginny… i’ve seen a couple here and there camping, but i never forget the one I saw clamped down on (i think it was) dad’s hand…and the blood ikkh… they can move really fast too…i’m a big lizard lover, but a little frightened of googies and snakes, even carpet snakes, i am fascinated but like to keep a nice distance. One of my mates Paul breeds snakes and so does my niece… and i like the babies and let them bite me for fun… it really really really hurts…like needles whacking into you hand!! but it’s cute.. cute when they are a little feisty and wanna bite you.. I can’t handle the fact that they have to breed baby mice to feed them live, it’s so gross! but that’s nature :) x
micklyn
Ah, you learn something everyday ( : I’m another one whe never knew what a goanna was… but now I do! Great story, thanks!!

I sent Janis a pic of my painting of one.we are in a bit of bush, gee I not too keen on snakes at all ! lots of green tree snakes here although too dry atm for much. [we have a dam attracts things]
Karin Taylor
replied
oo green snakes are so pretty… i like those green tree snakes, and there’s another one i like too, it’s really small but deadly, but cos the fangs are so tiny they can’t really bite you too bad when they’re babies…they have a pretty pink blush on their face.. .. hmm… can’t think what they’re called
I would like to see that painting you sent to Janis…... we had a pet carpet snake called Sylvester, but i reckon he was evil…he’d get out of his fishtank all the time and be hissing above the door when you walked through…. poor old Sylvester, dunno what happened to him … he was I think a diamond python
Pip Gerard
I loved reading that. what a great story. xxoo
Karin Taylor

thx Pip, i reckon Dad will be pleased to hear that!! xxxxx

This is an iguana…they would often be hanging over head in trees as I went to school, but can drop down very suddenly…they are able to camouflage themselves easily and grow to over 6ft and are generally herbivourous…I have not lived there for a very long time, so if I came across one now, I would run a mile…in those days, it was ordinary life…

Lynsye Medalia
LMAO!!! That’s a really funny story! :) Thanks for sharing!

Interesting read Karin. So to confirm, this took place in the UK? (U sold the goanna in pounds… and I know of a Kings Cross in London)
Karin Taylor

Hi Mui-ling, glad you enjoyed tlhis thx. this actually took place in Sydney Australia at Kings Cross. There is also a Kings Cross here. My mum used to live in the Fire Station (Sal in the story) at Kings Cross Fire Station in the city. Her dad was a fireman ( my poppa)
