So you want to be an artist....
a open letter to all artists
Dear friend,
So you want to be an artist, I could not be happier!
My heart swells with joy and admiration because I reason that you are being guided by your passion, now going where no-one else has gone before, this will be your unique journey through life, a voyage of self discovery.
You are not only artist, but explorer, researcher, philosopher, guide, teacher, healer. I could not be prouder.
From hereon, you will impart the essence of yourself to others, your sense of values, your search for truth, through the expression of your art. It will be a privilege and a truly precious thing, a special way of life, not something not everyone in the world gets a chance to do.
As an artist, you will realise you can send a message of hope, of tolerance, of life, love and understanding… a message of peace….any and all kinds of messages, even messages that don’t seem positive at first, will penetrate the hearts of people you’ve never encountered before and the artistic impressions you make will be reinterpreted by those you touch, in the light of their own circumstances.
Your art will serve as a signpost at times for others struggling through life, at which time they will stop to view your art, and it will have a significant impact on them.
Through your passion and creativity, you may help people make a decision at a crossroad, guide them through a dark valley, and enable them to climb the mountain, move out from the shadows… or bring a smile to an otherwise gloomy day.
Your art may bring back memories, create nostalgia, help people deal with unpleasant issues, open new dialogues. Never underestimate yourself and the possibilities that lay ahead of you.
Your art will serve as a creative platform for the expression of yourself, your thoughts, ideals and passions, will come to represent you and through the images you create, people will come to know you, but moreso, you will come to know yourself, through your art on centre stage.
Perhaps the greatest thing about becoming an artist, is the journey toward self understanding and renewal. Discoveries which will afford you renewed empathy toward others. All internal and external struggles that an artist experiences are worthwhile and add to your creative toolbox. It is through suffering, wrestling and struggling with ideals, self, beliefs, motivation etc, that the artist gains insight, wisdom and empathy for others.
You must learn not to focus too long on yourself and your own needs and desires, for there is a danger you could become narcissistic in your outlook and the world needs people like you to remain otherly.
In all that you do as an artist, remember what a privilege it is to be one. The journey is often difficult and may not be financially rewarding. Many will not appreciate what you are going through, but you will find friends that do understand and rewards of a different nature.
Keep an open mind and search for others along the way that know and understand ‘the way of the artist’ because they will commiserate with you during your low times and celebrate with you during your highs. The ‘way of the artist’ can be a lonely journey sometimes, but moreso when we remain isolated. Share your sorrows and your joys with active listeners who care for you, and it will be less lonely.. and you will then do this for others that stumble and fall along the way, paying forward the goodness.
On this journey of self discovery as an artist, through thoughtful process, observation of yourself and interaction with others, you will gain greater insight and understanding into the human condition, by being open as you are, you are enlightened and learning all the way, for the value of the destination itself, will be determined by the level of difficulty required to reach it.
I wish for you a prosperous journey and may the destination be as rich and rewarding as the journey it takes to get there…
your friend,
karin

Makes me sound like much more that I feel that I am, I was told today that people in California who have viewed my images didn’t believe at first that i had taken all of them. So maybe that is some what of an affirmation that I am doing something right. I love it so much and it really fills a part of my life that I didn’t know was empty. Thank you so much for sharing these awesome thoughts.

Byron I don’t think you quite realise what a special person you are, and how that translates into your photography, your writing and your philosophy on life. All these aspects of you overlap and spill into one another, making each part richer and more vibrant and alive. I think that people not realising that you have taken all these amazing images, is definitely an affirmation, and it redefines who you are in their eyes. That is really why I embarked on this journey, I needed to know whether I had substance, whether there was a reason for my existence, and in doing so I discovered many other wonderful things. People can give you this reflection of yourself that you can’t always see in the mirror. By putting your art and yourself on display, on exhibition both here and in other locations, you are giving the world an opportunity to say how it sees you, what you are reflecting to them…. a fascinating deal that actually changes your perception of yourself and makes you a being of more substance as you begin to believe in yourself. This is for me, the healing part of art. I hope you find that too :)

Yeah Karin I quoted your words to the butcher this morning, he just shook his head and sighed, “Well mate, it sure had a significant impact upon me, when I saw what the graffiti artist did to my shop wall overnight….”....:-))))))))))))))))))))))))))

This is sooooooooooo true, I have a dear artist friend who is going through difficulties right now, I hope she reads this, when times are low, I am going to read this again, and feel special that I am an artist and proud of it, thanks
Karin Taylor
replied
thanx Nomadic, it’s not always easy is it, during the hard times it’s good to have friends that care enough to ask about you, to notice. I was in a good place today, able to write the thoughts that have been building in my heart and mind for the last 7 years. I hope your friend finds hope and comfort soon, I’m sure they will, you would be a good friend and listener :)
Nick Ford
Beautiful words and perfect timing. Exactly what i needed to read today. Many thanks.
Karin Taylor
replied
Nick, I’m glad that these words resonate with you and where you’re at today…
I felt inspired to write and it just poured out… doesn’t happen often, so i had hoped there was someone out there that this would reach, someone in need of a little encouragement. You are of great worth to this community and others, your art is fabulous and I see you’re very talented after perusing your portfolio a while… i hope your days are brighter soon :)
Marilyn Harris
Thank you so much Karin for your wonderful words of wisdom. I guess we just have to ride the lows. My son is going through a hard time at the moment – out of work – he’s a graphic designer – I think he’s almost given up! I’ll print off your writing – hope that it will help! xo :o)
Karin Taylor
replied
I hope it helps a bit too Marilyn. Sometimes life is a bit hard on artists, especially due to the sensitivies that come with the territory. It always helps to have someone to talk to, even if we feel we can’t do much more than that :) ... all we need is a hug and an ear sometimes :) xx
(I hope he finds work soon, and can enjoy some creativity of his own in his spare time…. doing what he wants to do.)

Thank you! :-)

Inspiration is an amazing thing Karin. A tiny drop can set off a chain reaction that can move mountains. And your letter is a 55 gallon drum of industrial strength. Thanks babes!
Karin Taylor

thanx so much mobii…
You have this way with words, I love your humour/style/tshirt designs –
you’re so good at getting your intended message across… much better than I.
You were very instrumental in me writing this, asking the big questions gets the mind whirling, and all sorts of things that were laying around getting dusty in my brain, get woken up. lol
Sarah ORourke
THankyou Karin, such beautiful & inspirational words! And wise words… i’ve often wondered & questioned what makes a person an “artist” & how do you know if or when you are one… too often my mind, & probably most others too, leaps to financial success or perhaps recognition, to be in this gallery or that… & perhaps it is some or all or none of those things… but what it is at it’s core is as you so eloquently put it… “impart the essence of yourself to others, your sense of values, your search for truth, through the expression of your art.”
And that is such a wonderful gift, both to give & to receive.
You’re a wonderful Artist in every sense Karin, the complete embodiment of your words above & we all value you here very much for it!
Xxx

.......Dear Sarah, I couldn’t write this until now, but it has been forming for years. For seven years ago, I embarked on the journey, to fulfil my creative passion. I couldn’t define what it was to be an artist until now, because I hadn’t yet come to a conclusion. I was talking to mobii earlier and through trying to nut out what being an artist means, it dug up some things that were laying dormant and i felt these words just rise up and out of me. Like breath itself. And I wanted to speak them, before they dissipated into thin air again. For now, this is my interpretation, for some… art will be a hobby, for others it will be a career, for others still, it will become more than a passion, it will define their living and breathing, their existence. I maintain there are many kinds of artists in the world, just as there are many kinds of people, but there are many who find that they impart so much of who they are into their art, that it is really a pure extension of themselves, and it is to those who think upon this deeply, that i am reaching out to, encouraging, embracing… for it is the most difficult thing… to present yourself through your art to the world. It can be hard, discouraging, painful, yet it is the most satisfying and sweet way also, to live a life. But all of life and art is a journey, and I know that through our chats you are so aware of that…we are on the road…when one falls down, i hope the other will pick him up….and when the other falls down…i hope the one who was helped earlier, will reciprocate… and so forth… i see that goodness being passed on all the time by people like you :) xxxx

i hadn’t heard of it before MT but I had a quick read of “So you want to be a boxer” and I liked this verse:
If you listen and you learn
There’s an honour you can earn and defend here
When you do see the crown
You’re a king not a clown
A contender
I think listening and learning is the most important part of the journey …
