Hands are for Healing
a simple story by Karin Taylor 17 Apr ‘14
There was once a little Matryoshka doll
her name was Anastasiya, which means
Anastasiya lived in the fair and far-off village
On the coast of the White Sea called Shoina
Poor little Anastasiya was blind and deaf
she had no hands or feet
no sense of taste or smell.
One day Sofia, the little girl who loved the doll
Decided to give her some eyes to see
Some ears to hear, some hands, some feet
And her sense of taste and smell.
Sofia took a small paint brush and dipped it
She chose an azure hue for Anastaysiya’s eyes
The colour of fresh pink roses for her nose
A plum colour mixed from red and blue for her lips
Sofia painted little black gumboots onto Anastasiya’s feet
And mittens of blue, gold and green on her little hands
Before long Anastasiya’s also had ears and was very happy
To be able to see, hear, smell, taste, walk and touch.
For some time, Anastasiya amused herself
And filled her days with fun but she only thought of herself
And the pleasure she could get from her new parts.
Until one very snowy cold day, she noticed a tiny bird
With a red breast struggling in the snow and with each
Struggle digging itself deeper into a hole until
It was almost buried.
Anastasiya heard it’s weak cry,
ran with her feet shod in black gumboots,
picked up the little bird so gently in her tiny mittened hands,
and held it close to her heart for warmth.
She touched it’s feathers with her little nose and nuzzled
It with love, planting upon it’s head one tender sweet kiss.
By the warmth of the fire that night
The tiny bird revived and came back to life
Tweeting a tune, happy and healthy, saved from the snow
It was ever grateful to Anastasiya, who that day
Learned that ….
…….hands are for healing, eyes are for seeing beyond ourselves,
feet are sometimes for rescues, ears are for learning needs of others,
noses are for nuzzling and affection, hearts are for comforting,
homes are for loving.
