Continued………..
…there is some commotion, and the sound of men’s voices and grunting, shifting things, the motor slows to a gentle putt, putt, putt and we hear the sound of water lapping the hull of BIG HAT….

We’re here!! Oh joy!! We’ve made it to our destination….Keswick Island now we can say goodbye to the strange ‘Flying Dutchman’ and hello to our new island home, or should I say tin hut!

We find out later, many years hence, that our guide “The Flying Dutchman” hit an unfortunate sea snake on his way home that night, and severely damaged the boat motor…thank goodness we made it safely to Keswick with no such bungles….visions of hitting a whale, or a turtle, or another vessel and being stuck out there in the dark, in a deep channel, full of too many unknowns.

As we disembark, we are surprised to feel something sharp and crunchy underfoot, it’s coral…we’re not on some sandy beach as we’d imagined….but there is no light to see, it is pitch black and all we can think of is getting warm and settled.

Now Dad fusses around for a torch to light the way, and our luggage is thrown onto the coral shore, just above the tideline….we are so tired, too tired to take much in……emotionally drained…..physically exhausted from hanging on for our lives.

We all have to help carry everything up to the door of the hut, it is a small but steep incline, first over the coral, and then the bushy exterior until we find the cement step leading up to the front door….it’s unlocked, uninhabited……there are 6 bunk beds in all and a double bed in another room….a smallish kitchen with a fridge, sink, some makeshift cupboards, and a large bathroom with little more than a dunny and a canvas shower bag….too tired to worry about that now….just looking for a bed to bunk down in…..

Out come the sleeping bags, the pillows, we’ll deal with whatever comes next in the light of day tomorrow………and what a day that will be!!

…stay tuned for Chapter 4 tomorrow
