No Place Like Home - The Dream Language of Oz by Karin Taylor

I wrote this a while ago with the intention of starting a new series of paintings on the Wizard of Oz….the idea is still there… I hope to begin a new painting/series soon on the subject.

What I have written here, is the unfolding of the research work on my subject…it is important that I gain a deep understanding or insight into my subject, as well as preparing the visual side of things, i like to get a feel for it spiritually, or at least have an empathy with/for my subject/s.

I read different editions of the story itself, and look at as many different illustrations as possible, rewatch the movie a few times, and listen to any music associated with it…for example the tracks from the movie, as well as things like Elton John’s and Katie Noonan’s versions of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and eminem’s Yellow Brick Road and Raine Maida – Yellow Brick Road and anything else i can find associated with the imagery of the story…

Somewhere over the Rainbow by Judy Garland
Somewhere over the Rainbow Eva Cassidy
Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Kamakawiwo
Fields of Gold Eva Cassidy

‘There’s no place like home.’
‘If I only had a heart, a brain, some courage’.

Do these phrases bear any significance for us and if so, is it feasible that a journey ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ holds the key to unlocking the mysteries of life and leading us home?

Cinema-going was an uncommon treat when I was young. My first experience, when friends and I went to see The Wizard of Oz. Enthralled by the abundance of shimmering imagery on-screen, I went along for the ride and somehow ended up in Oz through the magic of movie-making. Young hearts yearned to go there real-time and live under the guidance of Glinda the Good Witch, the equivalent of all fairy fantasies wrapped up in one delicate pink tulle gown. Bottoms glued to seats under cover of darkness, we savoured every moment as the drama played out.

Upon closer scrutiny, the hazy mist of childhood dreams subsides and the idea dawns on me that I’ve been looking for that same elusive place ever since. With directions like ’......somewhere over the rainbow….’ and an ‘F’ in Geography, let’s just say, getting there won’t be easy.

Thirty years on and I’ve deliberated over this with new insight, finding it possible to correlate Dorothy’s quest with the journey of my own life. It turns out that home, heart, courage * and *wisdom are actually the co-ordinates I’ll need to find my way there and back. Here’s where the childhood myth of Oz morphs into an adult tale of mystical proportions.

Home – a different entity for everyone. Some suggest it’s purely habitat or memories from childhood…others feel at home wherever they stop for juice. For me, home is actually a concept, not tangible. It’s the fulfillment of wholeness, a solid understanding of one’s self, the capacity for resilience, and consistency in humility, ie knowing one’s true and rightful place in the scheme of all things and having the good sense to stay there.

Heart – an inseparable element of the journey. What are the heart qualities one should hope to see manifest? Gentleness, openness and honesty would be a good start, mix in some x-ray vision to help see through rough exteriors into the inner man. The ideal heart won’t be swayed by petty jealousy and rivalry, it’s development bittersweet, the beat growing stronger with every adversity through the school of hard knocks

The Witch cruelly suggests Tin Man’s heart has been spirited away, but in truth, his poor heart was substantially battered and bruised, transporting him far further along the road home than he at first realises.

Courage – played out in the determination to strive for what you believe in, giving the ‘heave-ho’ to discouragement and self-doubt, overcoming fear and concern about what others think. Exhibiting strength of character and becoming a voice for those without scope for expression. Having courage to change, making brave and unpopular decisions, taking the road less travelled – these things should not be overlooked. In retrospect, life affords us plenty of opportunities for the development of courage. Heroic intentions not only benefit one’s self, but inspire and motivate others. Courage is cultivated through each conscious decision to step outside our comfort zone. We don’t get far without it.

Lion came a long way on his journey from being scared of his own shadow to having great confidence in himself as King of the Jungle. Lion was not lacking courage, but insight into the human condition…unaware that feeling scared and apprehensive is at times, part and parcel of life. Courage is only a step away from fear at any time.

Wisdom – the most difficult and elusive of them all! Some have easy access to it, while others must strive for it. Wisdom is the ability to separate fact from fiction, to make sound decisions after weighing up all possible outcomes.

1. Dorothy’s dissatisfaction with farmlife shifted significantly when she listened to a stranger who changed her perception and gave her new insights. It is worthwhile visiting problems from all angles to provide the best possible overview and help us make wise decisions.

2. Scarecrow was intelligent but the farmer took it for granted that he didn’t have a brain. What Scarecrow lacked was wisdom, closely followed by self esteem. If he’d had the wisdom to match his intellect, he may have saved himself a lot of turmoil by discerning that the farmer had simply made a hasty assumption. It is wise to be cautious in making or listening to assumption made about ourselves and others.

3. The Wizard was a grave disappointment, not really possessing great magical powers, he nonetheless became a sage by performing the incredible feat of helping these odd-bods find themselves. Through his considerable wisdom, he was able to shed light on the plight of the four pilgrims.

Conclusion – Home, heart, courage and wisdom need to be combined, interwoven for maximum effect. As they are the four co-ordinates for pinpointing our ultimate destination. The journey may fall short of the desired location if we pursue one without the other. Dorothy knew this to be true and in order to reach her goal she engaged the attributes and virtues she’d need along the way in the unlikely forms of a Scarecrow for intelligence, a Lion for courage a Tin Man for heart and Oz the Wizard for wisdom. Dorothy’s dream powerfully dramatised her subconscious thought and brought her full circle back home.

Dreams are more than just simple imaginings, they have great potential. Not unlike envelopes marked ‘return to sender’, they contain messages for us that can be guideposts to buried concerns, listen to them and travel home with certainty.

Finally, miracles are rarely instantaneous, those of us who seek them do well to prepare for the bumpy ride over the rainbow and back home.

‘The greatest discovery of my generation is that man can alter his life simply by altering the attitude of mind’ (William James 1842-1910)

    Hi Karin,

It is so strange that you posted this, 2 days earlier I was watching it…
and then chitty chitty bang bang

I dont know if you are familiar with Caroline Myss… she talks about the wizard of oz in her book sacred contracts… pg 171-179.

Let me know, I can scan it for you and send it..

I think a poppies piece would be superb with Lion, Toto and Dorothy sleeping..
She believes it is similar to Jesus in Gethsemane when he took his 12 apostles to the garden and they went to sleep

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

    Hi Emily,

oh wow, i’ve had this simmering for a few years, it went off the boil but came back to me in the last couple of days….until i got this burning desire to revisit it all…that is amazing Emily, that you too have just been watching it. I am not familiar with Caroline Myss, but i think i would find it very valuable reading….I am very open to anyone elses’ interpretations as i know it will stretch me further and enhance my understanding. I would love it if you could scan it for me Emily, that would be wonderful. I have an alternative gmail address i can give you for sending it to. I once thought of doing the field of poppies, and yes it does remind one of the apostles falling asleep on Jesus… the ideas that i have for the pix are going to be rather unusual tho, not too traditional, so they may not be to everyone’s liking, but I’m so looking forward to getting started….i think i’ll draw up all the pics first, and paint them after, that way I’ll be able to get a flow from one to the next….it won’t actually follow the story so much, as depict certain aspects that appeal to me and my twisted brain :)
    thx so much, Karin xo

Wow! A fellow Oz enthusiast. Great stuff, can’t wait to see your images. I must recommend Lisbeth Zwerger’s illustations for The Wizard of Oz. They are completely unique but stay true to the descriptions in the original book. Here’s a good site of Lisbeth’s gorgeous work if you’re interested. Lisbeth Zwerger Good luck for the project Karin : )

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

thank you so much Paul!! it’s funny, i notice a few people are on this subject at the same time in their thoughts! I just had a look at Lisbeth Zwerger’s work and it is magical! ....ideas are still fermenting in my head at the moment, but I’m looking forward to making a start…i think mine will be rather different, probably very stylised with a subtext, it should be interesting :)

This is wonderful…At some point life becomes that “unfinished piece”, no less a life if it is unfinished. Your musings are so beuatiful Karin. Thank-you for sharing them even if “unfinished”..
The parts on courage to me are at the heart..To reflect on courage is one of my favorite activities, because it feeds my heart…Courage is from the heart, in fact an old word that has its origins in the French language..: as far back as 1300, “corage”, “coraticum”, ... “heart,” It is about living with a bigger heart than we were born with..being consciously aware of the risks of failure, but taking that leap because we believe in something bigger than ourselves anyway.

    Wonderful work Karin.

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

Thank you and how beautifully clear you put it…. We are like unfinished masterpieces allof us with incredible potential … It’s all about the choices we make, they seem to forge the characters and personalities we become. For rarely does a child begin it’s life filled with rage and murder in his heart, and yet we see adults like this….. Circumstance, chance, predestination, I’m
not sure that those things matter, it’s more about the reaction or the response we choose to each sutuation.

    In looking back over my
life, the worst situations of all have led to the greatest growth of all….
I have complained bitterly when they were upon me, or going through the throws, but how much I’ve grown in compassion and understanding to those around me directly correlates to my own suffering…therefore I Wang to choose to be grateful fir whatever crap life can throw my way lol xxx

Dearest Karin, I remember reading this profoundly thought-provoking piece before… It resonated deep within my being then, and for some inexplicable reason, I was drawn here again… But then again, I do indeed know why I needed to read this…
You are amazing Karin, I just needed to tell you this, and to thankyou again…
For your precious insight, wisdom, heart and soul… (((HUG))) :)
    Incidently, The Wizard of Oz was the second book I bought, followed by The Marvellous Land of Oz… I was about eleven at the time, and had not yet seen the film… It thrilled me then, and I vowed I would one day have a pair of ruby slippers if nothing else… still working on that… ;

Thankyou again, and I’m so happy my sculptures resonated with you…

Lovely Yan..this is incredible Karin, so in depth, I love your research on this topic, dissecting things like this is one of the things I love to do alot, you have seen some wonderful things in Oz, have you ever heard you can apparently play Dark Side of The Moon to the movie and the music fits exactly with the scenes? I would never heave thought about reflecting on this, truly influential and inspirational work Karin :O)

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied 16 days ago

wow Vanessa, i don’t have any idea how you chanced upon this, but i’m so happy you did, i didn’t know that about the Dark Side of the Moon, how fascinating…i’ve been noticing that there is a certain creative consciousness that most flow around us, as so many people seem to be on the same track of thought and creative pursuits..and no one realises, til you sorta bump into each other, and then you see you’ve done a similar artwork or somesuch…and it’s vaguely disturbing, but at the same time, heartening…i’ve never experienced anything like it … so maybe that creative energy that’s out there, the creators of Oz and the creators of DSOTM were tapping into the same rhythmn and energy…it’s weird cos i would have thought that was a bit out there for me to believe, but seeing is believing and there’s just been too much to ignore….i’m so pleased you enjoyed reading this….it was a really big deal for me at the time, and i truly studied and dissected each thought until it came together into one cohesive thought and an understanding that better helped me live life…..i find it hard to go along and not understand or have purpose…for me, it’s so important to feel that what i do is purposeful…and so this is why i love the circle…for it is completion…i love to create, but love to sell….and a circle that not only completes itself but links to other circles….growth and growing, learning and changing and having a willingness to be teachable… and forgiving, forging the way ahead is such a difficult task, but it’s an important one that one ends up a better person by the end than one was in the beginning…i’m so far from where i’d like to be….giving, unselfish, never jealous or envious…but still i have these emotions and want to get beyond them and grow through them…nurturing strength of spirit and for me I guess nurturing my faith, is a big and important part of it all….i think that i am most comfortable when i am in my spiritual and meditative zone with my creator and there it is that no body is required, simply spirit…that’s where i thrive best, i think that’s where my home is… who needs a body lol :) x

  • Vanessa Barklay

Absolutely mate, I just replied a nearly as long comment on your Octopus girl about a similar experience. I myself, dissect the story of Atlantis by Plato and through my studies of ancient history, ancient religion, myth, philosophy of life and the meaning of the story it brings me to new levels of understanding I find hard to discuss with anyone, Atlantis has been so “Disneyised” and misunderstood etc it is hard for anyone to take it seriously, but I do and I read many ancient texts to comprehend those times, which brings me to deeper understandings about how and why we are here and what is our purpose…the spirit is the essence to me too and the story is really about finding your spirit that sleeps until you can awaken it to it’s fullest potential which is beneficial to ourselves and others around us, ‘simply spirit’ I love that, my group Creative Spirits of Qld is dedicated to our spirit that is in each of us…my body is nothing compared to my spirit.. :O) :O)

I adore this story for all of the lessons it has for us as adults – love it so much that I wrote three different poems on this same theme – lol. But I never did it justice as you have here Karin – this is absolutely brilliant. You have taken every aspect of this story and brought it home to us to reflect on. I’ve always thought that in fact we seek those qualities without realizing that they are already within us if we just take the time to uncover them! I am going to want to return to this time and again, Karin – it is so inspiring and uplifting it makes my spirit positively soar!

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied 11 days ago

OH thank you so much lianne, it means so much to me, because you write so beautifully and are so in touch with your emotions and able to express them in the written in exquisite detail and grandeur… i feel so lacking at times, but i had well thought this out, long and hard, deliberating as you say over it all…and hoping to find my way home in some way…it really helped me, trying to nut things out often does, as does mulling things over out loud with a good and trusted friend… it sort of helps me to come to conclusions which i normally would never make…and these help steer me along a new course…have you seen “Where the Wild Things Are”..? we saw it yesterday, and i’m thinking about challenging myself by deliberating over what the movie meant to me…i think there’s somthing to learn from it, and yet still felt the message was a little hidden and i have to look and search for the depth of meaning there….to think this makes your spirits soar, well i had to take a moment to smile a while before i replied…thank you for encouraging me !! :) x
