the kindness of strangers by © Karin Taylor

while I was out taking photographs yesterday in people’s gardens, an elderly gentleman approached me and asked whether I’d like to come in and take some photos of his orchids, he had masses of orchids and was such a lovely gesture. It was midday, so the sun wasn’t at the right angle for me to take any decent pictures, but as I was leaving I noted his gardenias were beautiful, and he picked this one for me, and I went on my way thinking how special it is when strangers are so kind. A reminder to remember to pass on this sort of kindness to others, because it’s what makes the world a better place for everyone…the ripple effect. NB: The teacup and plates are gifts from my Grandmother, they are antiques handed down, there is no visible inscription on them, so I have no idea what kind of china this is. It is very delicate and dainty. I found the golden spoon at an Op Shop recently :)

What a gorgeous image, Karin… and the story behind is is awesome!! You are so right about how that kindness makes the world a better place…. what a lovely experience for you! And even more impressive that you recognized it!!
    Excellent image work! xx ~kim

  • thank you so much Kim, it was so sweet too the way the gardenia seemed to match my little teacup and saucers… I was so thrilled by that…. almost daily, the world disappoints in one way or another, for my way is to have too many great expectations…so it’s just beautiful, especially when feeling low or whatever, when a stranger does you a kindness. Yesterday was a low day, so the stranger made all the difference :) xx

Very lovely Karin, and such a beautiful story. I remember during my first year in university we had an assignment where we had to go out and take pictures of any building. I walked around the neighborhood, but felt odd just photographing someone’s house – especially in a neighborhood I was not familiar with (it didn’t have to be a house but there weren’t any nice buildings otherwise close by). Then I came across an elderly gentleman who who was painting the neighborhood. I complimented his painting and told him I was looking for a house to photograph for my assignment, and he offered to let me photograph his house – he was very kind. When I arrived at his lovely home I started taking pictures, and suddenly I heard a cat meow – it was his cat. The cat came up to me and began circling around me while rubbing it’s head against my leg; hehe. His wife also asked if I would like some tea, but I told her it was okay. They were such lovely people – wow that was a long time ago… and it’s funny because overtime in that city I started having creepy and less pleasant experiences that I almost forgot that lovely moment… well my impression changed from time to time.

  • what a beautiful experience….there is always good somewhere, even in dark times, people do still operate out of the goodness of their hearts….I believe it is human nature to be kind and to reach out to others, it’s just the bad stuff that happens gets the bigger press and impresses upon us more I think xox
